Deputy Director, Finance – NHS England Finance and Planning Directorate

Join the Specialised Commissioning, Health and Justice and Armed Forces, Finance Business Partner team to support NHS funding and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Work closely with government to agree NHS funding.
• Ensure the NHS lives within its annual budget.
• Decide how to distribute funding to NHS services across England.
• Support innovative programmes that improve care and experience of NHS patients.
• Set financial and performance priorities for the NHS each year.
• Report NHS spend on annual services.
• Explore optimal use of NHS money, including spend on building or equipment.
• Consider national resource use to improve health outcomes, reduce inequality, and support the NHS.
• Develop and implement effective reporting, planning, and allocation processes.
• Support changes to the financial framework for new operating models.
• Provide high‑quality finance business partner support to commissioning teams for key focus areas.

Required Skills and Experience

• Developing reporting on financial performance to an evolving stakeholder and leadership group.
• Supporting development of financial frameworks including allocation modelling.
• Providing finance business partner commissioning support to teams on high‑priority service areas and programmes.
• Ensuring in‑year financial delivery of commissioning areas.
• Experience in reporting, planning and budgeting within a public sector health organisation.
• Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills.
