Overview
As the Haematology IT Lead, you will work closely with a team of section managers who each hold a lead responsibility in ensuring service delivery, as well as with the Department Network Manager and colleagues from CWPS to provide a pan-pathology approach to development and improvement.
The Haematology department spans across the CWPS network, University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, George Eliot Hospital, and South Warwick Hospital. The successful candidate will be required to work across all sites.
You will be expected to work well as part of the Management Team, be innovative, support your management colleagues in service provision, and deputise for the Network Manager when required. Adaptability, resilience, and a proven capacity to manage a wide range of tasks alongside a broad group of staff grades and abilities are essential. Enthusiasm, creativity, confidence to lead and support within a demanding modern environment are also required.
Training and guidance will be given to ensure you are supported within your role. We will accept applications from Biomedical Scientists keen to undertake an operational role. A Band 6 Trainee Section Manager post may also be offered to the right candidate who does not hold an MSc or equivalent qualification; completion of the IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma over 12 months whilst in this role would then progress to Band 7 Section Manager.
Responsibilities
- Daily manage and monitor staff in the performance of routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient and environmental samples containing potentially infectious material (blood, urine, faeces, sputum and tissue specimens) using complex and highly specialised techniques, according to standard operating procedures.
- Design and plan departmental rotas, allocate and reallocate work schedules for the team, and determine work priorities to meet service needs.
- Support the Department Manager in the planning, development, co-ordination and evaluation of the pathology service, and deputise for the Pathology Department Manager as required.
- Record and validate results when required; interpret complex results, and authorise individual reports from the team in electronic form and/or verbally to authorised recipients.
- Be proficient in the use of the Quality Management system, ensuring effective development and/or management of controlled documentation, non-conformities and audit reports within the system.
- Coordinate external and internal quality assurance schemes, supervise compliance with departmental audit schedules, review findings and implement service changes and improvements as necessary.
- Manage the propagation and maintenance of laboratory standards (ISO/CPA, MHRA, HTA, HSE and other statutory regulations) and ensure delivery of services in line with these principles throughout CWPS.
- Ensure quality assurance procedures are adhered to and all necessary internal records are maintained; collate data for and lead departmental meetings and propose and implement change where appropriate, ensuring clear lines of communication at all times.
- Manage and monitor maintenance on routine and complex equipment to ensure accuracy and precision of results; provide specialist support for staff to troubleshoot faults and take appropriate action to maintain patient service.
- Take responsibility for achieving and maintaining local and national performance targets, managing KPIs including prioritising work to achieve turnaround times, managing staff attendance, and attaining and sustaining PDR and mandatory training compliance.
- Collect, interpret and collate information for presentation at departmental Operational Board reports and quality meetings, in an agreed format.
- Propose, oversee and develop the implementation of new techniques, equipment and working practices, including supporting any management of change processes that require implementation.
- Provide and receive specialist departmental knowledge to and from staff and service users.
- Manage and maintain stocks of materials, reagents, consumables and equipment, ensuring economical use of non-pay resources and identifying areas of cost improvement.
- Handle difficult and complicated telephone enquiries, such as complaints, record information and complete follow-up reports when necessary.
- Manage and monitor staff performance, oversee specialist diagnostic service, and support the department manager in the planning, development and co-ordination of the service.
