Senior Civil Engineer - Contract (Outside IR35)
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to join a leading infrastructure consultancy on a contract basis. The role will support multiple ongoing rail‑focused civil engineering schemes, working closely with multidisciplinary design and delivery teams.
Role Overview
The successful engineer will contribute to the development, checking and delivery of high‑quality civil and structural design packages. You'll collaborate with internal designers, external partners and construction teams to ensure solutions are safe, buildable and cost‑effective.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce and check drawings, reports and specifications to industry and client standards
- Ensure designs are safe, compliant and aligned with relevant legislation and CDM requirements
- Liaise with construction teams to ensure buildability and value for money
- Manage design production, calculations, risk registers and technical documentation
- Act as Designer, Checker, Approver or CRE when required
- Support project administration including programme, resource and budget monitoring
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of processes and standards
- Coordinate with clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams
- Provide technical leadership and contribute to long‑term development of engineering capability
Required Experience
- Strong civil engineering background within major infrastructure projects
- Experience delivering and checking civil/structural designs (bridges, earthworks, drainage, platforms, structures)
- Understanding of multidisciplinary coordination across large‑scale projects
- Proficiency with civil/structural design software, BIM workflows and common industry tools
- Knowledge of Eurocodes, British Standards and relevant railway standards
- Experience working under CDM and applying Prevention Through Design principles
Desirable Experience
- Exposure to platforms, foundations, steelwork, masonry, cladding or underground structures
- Experience working with statutory undertakers
- Interest in collaborating with international design teams
Skills & Qualifications
- BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to lead, supervise and develop junior engineers
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Competent with AutoCAD, Bentley tools and standard office software
