Responsibilities
- Deliver patient‑centred care with a high degree of autonomy, independent assessment and clinical decision‑making in line with NHS England’s Multi‑professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice or other recognised service specific credential.
- Fulfil the expectations and core capabilities of an ACCP, delivering independent clinical practice across the four pillars of advanced practice, while committing to lifelong learning and continuous professional development through clinical supervision and maintaining an advanced practice portfolio.
- Work in partnership with patients, families and members of the multi‑disciplinary team to best meet the needs and wellbeing of the patient, providing high‑quality evidence‑based care within Paediatric Critical Care and Retrieval services.
- Operate at an advanced level drawing on a diverse range of knowledge and clinical skills, performing complex decision‑making to determine evidence‑based therapeutic interventions. May work on Oxford University Hospital sites, other hospital sites, or outside hospitals as part of the SORT retrieval service.
- Lead a team in resuscitating, stabilising and transferring a critically ill child, performing high‑level clinical or technical skills and procedures necessary for paediatric patients, in the OUH paediatric intensive care, emergency department or transport/retrieval environments.
- Recognise, assess and manage the full range of medical and surgical paediatric conditions requiring intensive care support, including the management of safeguarding issues within this environment.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Healthcare Professional (NMC, HCPC or GPhC).
- First level degree (HEI Level 5 or 6) in the undergraduate base profession.
- Level 7 Master’s in Advanced Practice or equivalent in relevant advanced practice field.
- Specialist postgraduate education or qualifications relevant to Paediatric Critical Care.
- Relevant training for extended skills and imaging interpretation (e.g. IRMER).
- APLS / ePALS provider.
- Registered Independent and Supplementary Prescriber.
- Demonstrated completion of an accredited 'academic' pathway leading to a Level 7 MSc, with evidence of workplace‑based advanced practice capabilities via a portfolio available for review at interview.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
- Paediatric field registration or other relevant qualifications.
- Mentoring or facilitating workplace learning qualification.
- Leadership course or qualification.
- Professional ACP credential from a recognised professional body pathway (e.g. FICM) or NHSE.
- APLS instructor.
- MSc Level 7 Advanced Paediatric Critical Care Practice.
- Non‑medical authorisation of blood products certificate.
- Certification of death qualification, significant experience and expertise within PICU/retrieval.
- Evidence of management ability and leadership skills.
- Evidence of ongoing CPD, including multisource feedback and workplace assessments.
- Excellent clinical acumen and practical procedural skills with evidence of competency.
- Existing technical clinical procedural skills relevant to PICU with evidence of comprehensive critical care competencies.
- Knowledge of clinical governance issues and quality measures.
- Experience and evidence of clinical audit, service evaluation or improvements in practice.
- Analytical and problem‑solving skills to inform decision‑making and respond to unexpected demands.
- Experience of change management and research capability or application of research evidence to practice.
- Experience of writing for publication or conference presentations, commitment to CPD and development of others.
- Willingness to engage in clinical supervision and develop knowledge, skills and behaviours across the four pillars of advanced practice.
- Ability to recognise own limitations, work within scope, and act on feedback for practice change.
- Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, days, weekends or nights as required.
- Effective team working and leadership within a multi‑disciplinary professional team.
- Teaching and knowledge sharing with the MDT or externally to the organisation.
- Skills in mediation and conflict resolution, formal training or certificate.
- Excellent communication skills including documentation, note‑keeping and SBAR handover.
