Responsibilities
- Work independently and accountably as part of a team of clinicians offering 24‑hour mental health access and information in the locality of the Trust.
- The service operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with shifts in an in‑patient low secure forensic setting.
- Act as a role model to HCAs, supervising to ensure high‑quality care is provided.
- Collaborate with key partner organisations, service users, clinicians and other practitioners within the multidisciplinary team.
- Deliver a high‑quality, effective operational service to patients with complex needs in accordance with the principles and objectives of the Trust and its vision.
- Provide exemplary care to service users and their carers in collaboration with others within the organisation.
- Be responsible, along with other nursing staff, for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of all aspects of an individual patient’s care.
- Attend to the physical and psychological needs of patients under the nursing team’s care.
- Act as key worker and co‑worker for a designated group of clients.
- Deliver effective individualised care by supervising staff in the assessment of patient conditions, ensuring accurate and objective information is recorded and signed by the appropriate member of staff.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with clients, relatives and carers; write and contribute towards the formulation of care plans.
- Ensure effective and confidential communication, maintaining strict confidentiality regarding any information concerning patients and colleagues.
- Demonstrate awareness of the needs of carers of patients with mental health problems.
- Fully comply with the requirements of the NMC and maintain registration.
- Be aware of the Mental Health Act 1983 and of clients detained under its sections in the clinical area.
- Supervise the formulation of plans for patients’ discharge and transfer from clinical areas in line with the Care Programme Approach, Community Care Act 1990 and discharge policy.
- Observe changes in a patient’s physical condition or mental state and document appropriately.
- Assist patients toward self‑care and independence.
- Use correct techniques for moving and handling patients, recognising the need for personal responsibility.
- Contribute to a calm and relaxed atmosphere/environment by acting in a relaxed manner.
- Establish positive professional relationships with patients, adopting a non‑judgemental approach and treating each with respect and courtesy.
- Plan and organise therapeutic and social activities for patients in the clinical area.
- Act as a mentor to student nurses and provide managerial supervision to junior colleagues.
- Participate in therapeutic and social activities/groups.
- Assist patients who require hoists and wheelchairs when appropriate.
- Take on clinical, managerial and environmental responsibilities as requested.
- Ensure adherence to local security protocols and procedures at all times.

Training, Staff Development and Teaching
- Demonstrate insight into personal developmental needs; discuss these formally in supervision and annual appraisals.
- Obtain appropriate courses and provide feedback and knowledge sharing to colleagues.
- Present informal and formal teaching sessions of clinical and academic nature.
- Act as a practice assessor for learner students, meeting band 5 staff requirements.
- Contribute to audit and research at ward level.
- Serve as a positive role model to colleagues and liaise effectively with multidisciplinary team members and significant others.
- Involvement in standard setting and evaluation at ward level using audit tools.
Personal and Professional Development
- Complete mandatory training in line with Trust policy.
- Receive and provide annual appraisals to lower banded staff.
- Provide training relevant to HCAs and lower banded staff.
- Take all allocated annual leave.
- Receive management supervision and provide it when appropriate.
- Comply with CPD, practice hours and revalidation requirements set by the NMC.
- Maintain medicines competency framework.
- Mentor and supervise students and junior staff.
- Provide clinical supervision to bands 3 / 4.
- Supervise lower banded staff on a day‑to‑day basis in line with Trust HR processes.
- Ensure lower banded staff are inducted, receive supervision, get an annual appraisal and comply with mandatory training.
- Attend seminars, conferences and other CPD events (internal and external).
- Attend regular Trust‑wide meetings and forums (professional nurse advisory committee, nurse forum, Link nurse forum).
- Attend additional in‑house developmental training and support delivery of mandatory training such as STORM, TASI, Infection Control, Safeguarding.
- Complete preceptorship within 6 months of commencing the professional nursing role.
- Develop resilience in dealing with emotive service user issues.
- Identify own stressors and seek timely support to prevent negative impact on wellbeing.
