Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a Band 5 Staff Nurse role in Critical Care, including Cardiac ICU, Neuro ICU and General ICU, within a dedicated trauma centre. This position is part of a structured career pathway with induction training and an in‑house Foundation programme.

You’ll work in a supportive environment where you can develop your skills in highly pressured situations, contribute to evidence‑based practice, and learn towards adult Critical Care qualifications at degree or masters level.

Responsibilities

  • Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct at all times.
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation of standards of care using the Fundamentals of Care framework.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised care and support other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead and supervise nursing staff at Band 5 and below, exercising good leadership and control.
  • Assume charge of the unit on a regular basis.
  • Liaise with patients and relatives, keeping them informed of treatment and progress and providing advice and support.
  • Adopt a pro‑active role in meeting the Clinical Governance agenda for Critical Care.
  • Promote evidence‑based practice and participate in relevant research or audits.
  • Discuss clinical developments with the Matron and Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, assisting in implementing changes to benefit patient care.
  • Inform the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse of any complaints or adverse events, reporting actions taken in line with Trust policies.
  • Ensure compliance with Infection Control standards as per Trust policy.
  • Organise the reception of patients and visitors in accordance with recognised procedures.
  • Ensure patients and relatives have access to medical staff to discuss treatment and progress.
  • Arrange the care of patients’ property with permission, within policy limits.
  • Maintain effective liaison with other nursing units and hospital departments, both within Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and referring hospitals.

Qualifications

  • Qualified Nurse (degree or diploma).
  • Registered nurse on the appropriate part of the register.
  • Significant post‑registration experience and training within a relevant speciality.
  • Ward management experience.
  • Knowledge of current issues within the acute Health Service.
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Evidence of supporting/ managing a range of learners in practice.
  • Evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice.
  • Demonstrated clinical decision‑making and judgement.
  • Commitment to the Care Group responsibilities.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development.
