Job summary
You will either be a Qualified Clinical Scientist or a Senior Biomedical Scientist, or someone who will attain your HCPC registration within 6 months of starting this role.
NHS Blood and Transplant is an integral part of the NHS, collecting and processing 2 million blood donations a year. Our Healthcare Scientists provide crucial support to NHS Hospitals, processing, testing and issuing blood and its components and delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to the transfusion of blood and stem cells, transplantation and tissue banking.
Our department provides testing and support services for stem cell and solid organ transplantation, a comprehensive service for the provision of HLA matched platelets and undertakes immunogenetic diagnostic testing. Our work, in partnership with the transplant programmes we support, allows many opportunities for applied research and development.
Main duties of the job
- Performing, analysing and interpreting both molecular and serological based testing in relation to solid organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplant and immunogenetic services
- Assisting with quality management issues within your section of the laboratory, under the direction of the Clinical Scientists Section Head and Laboratory Operations Manager.
- Contributing to the coordination and supervision of the work, training and conduct of scientific and support staff.
- With appropriate training and experience, you will be required to participate in a 24/7 on‑call rota and exceptionally to provide cover in times of operational difficulty with notice.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Fully Qualified:
- MSc or equivalent in transplantation, immunology, transfusion or relevant science or equivalent specialist knowledge gained by examination of a professional body e.g. BSHI Diploma or equivalent relevant experience.
- Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered (which must be maintained).
- BSc in Biological / Medical science or relevant science.
- Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
- Nearly Qualified:
- BSc honours degree in Biomedical or Biological Science.
- In the final year of the Scientist Training Programme (STP) in H&I.
- OR
- BSHI diploma and working towards ACS HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
- Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
- To be considered for the registered post, you will need to demonstrate that you are active on a Scientist Training Programme (STP) and you are within 6 months of completing and gaining HCPC registration.
Experience
Essential
- Fully Qualified:
- In depth knowledge and expertise in clinical solid organ and/or stem cell transplantation science.
- Proficiency in relevant specialised laboratory techniques / environments.
- Experience of working to quality and accreditation systems and standards.
- Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint).
- Nearly Qualified:
- Experience in the use of laboratory equipment and techniques.
- Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint).
