Precision Engineer / Tool Maker

Corby

Monday to Friday Working hours 0800 – 1630 + Overtime

£17.00 – £20.00 per hour (£35,300 – £41,600) DOE

We are seeking an experienced Precision Engineer or tool maker to join our client who are a small but established traditional engineering business. The company manufactures high precision components which are used primarily within the food and logistics industries. The successful person will be working in a traditional engineering machine shop producing high‑precision components and parts using manual milling and turning machines. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced precision engineer / toolmaker who takes pride in precision craftsmanship and enjoys hands‑on work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate manual machining equipment including lathes, milling machines, grinders, and semi‑manual CNC machines to cut and shape materials.
  • Manufacture parts and components for various industries primarily food and logistics.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications to create components and parts with extremely tight tolerances.
  • Inspect finished parts using measuring equipment (verniers, micrometres, gauges).
  • Maintain, repair, and modify tools and components to ensure optimal performance.
  • Work with other team members to achieve production targets.
  • Document records for quality and traceability.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Precision engineer experienced in milling and turning using manual machines and lathes.
  • Knowledge of XYZ machines would be advantageous.
  • Completion of a time‑served apprenticeship in mechanical engineering.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with an understanding of materials such as metals, stainless steel, aluminium, alloys and plastics.
  • Ability to work confidently within an engineering environment.
  • Good understanding of manual machining and semi‑CNC technologies.
  • Competent with measuring and inspection equipment.
  • Knowledge of workshop health & safety practices.
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills for diagnosing tool failures.
  • Full UK driving licence would be ideal as you may have to visit customers from time to time.
