Salary: £51,429 – £62,783 per annum inclusive of London allowance, plus additional allowance of up to £5k may be considered for exceptional candidates.
Full time – 36 hours per week.
Permanent contract.
Location: London.
Overall Purpose
The MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences is a biomedical discovery research institute of world‑leading excellence, embedded within the Imperial College London Hammersmith Hospital Campus. You will be a member of the Estates team at the MRC LMS working as a Maintenance Engineer. Based on your experience, you will focus on electrical, mechanical, or both, supporting servicing and repairs at the main LMS building and other LMS sites on the Hammersmith Hospital Campus.
Responsibilities
- Provide electrical and/or mechanical reactive maintenance on all plant systems and services.
- Help to manage and deliver project works.
- Supervise external service providers and contractors for maintenance work.
- Liaise with end users to plan repair or project works.
- Interrogate the computer‑controlled Building Management System (BMS) to monitor and identify fault diagnostics, taking appropriate action to resolve them.
- Undertake on‑call duties approximately 6‑8 weeks per annum, responding to callouts when off‑site.
- Assist in mentoring apprentices.
Working Relationships
- Report to the Hard Services Manager and be part of the Estates team within the wider LMS Research Environment function.
- Communicate with LMS members, effectively establishing their needs, both orally and in written specifications.
- Coordinate works with minimal disruption to science, working with Health & Safety, Lab Services, Soft Services.
- Interact with external service providers and contractors.
Person Requirement
Education, Qualifications & Training
- NVQ Level 4 Diploma in Engineering Maintenance, Mechanical Maintenance, or Electrical Services, or equivalent level BTEC/HNC/HND/C&G, or completion of a recognised electrical or mechanical apprenticeship.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Formal Health & Safety (H&S) qualifications and ability to undertake risk assessments.
- First aid training.
Previous Work Experience
- 5 years’ experience working in a complex building with responsibility for electrical and/or mechanical systems.
- Hands‑on experience performing routine and preventative maintenance and/or reactive/breakdown repairs.
- Experience supervising external contractors.
- Experience working in a scientific or healthcare environment.
Knowledge and Experience
- Good working knowledge of engineering services and an understanding of all aspects of building maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
- Strong understanding of health and safety regulations, risk assessments, lock‑out/tag‑out procedures, and safe systems of work.
- Experience using a BMS system.
- Experience with HVAC systems.
- Understanding of statutory maintenance requirements.
- Experience estimating the correct quantity of materials for maintenance or project works.
Personal Skills, Behaviours and Qualities
- Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Competent working with handheld devices (iPhone, tablets, etc.) and “smart” technology.
- Communication skills: effectively communicating with users and service providers, establishing needs and conveying them orally and in written specifications.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, able to work closely and effectively with staff at all levels.
- Listening ability, understanding and interpreting views, analysing, and providing advice/solutions.
- Organisation skills and initiative: plan and prioritise work with limited supervision, use initiative when required, adapt to changing priorities, and work outside normal hours (overtime is payable).
- Ability to work flexibly, including on‑call cover duties.
- Team working and independent working capability.
- Ability to work under pressure constructively and productively with colleagues at all levels within the LMS and externally.
