PATH’s AI Initiative is pioneering the use of generative AI and other advanced digital technologies to accelerate biomedical discovery, strengthen regulatory systems, and enhance the safety and scalability of digital healthcare. The initiative also sits alongside PATH’s broader digital health portfolio, including its work on climate and health data services and digital financial inclusion, bringing a technology-forward perspective to a wide range of global challenges.
The Senior Adviser is a versatile, high-impact role that sits at the centre of the AI initiative’s leadership. Working directly alongside the Chief AI Officer, you will operate across three interconnected areas: communications and external engagement for the initiative’s growing project portfolio; strategic and operational support to keep the initiative running smoothly; and hands-on project management for high-profile, discrete pieces of work often led by the Chief AI Officer personally.
This is not a traditional chief-of-staff role, though it borrows from that playbook. It’s also not a pure communications or project management role. Rather, it’s a position for someone who is equally comfortable drafting a compelling case study, troubleshooting a budget issue with the finance team, and standing up a new workstream from scratch. The portfolio you’ll support is genuinely diverse — spanning AI for biomedical science (including a flagship FCDO-funded programme on AI Co-Scientists), Wellcome Trust-funded climate and health data services in Malawi and Pakistan, and our digital financial inclusion work across Africa — so intellectual curiosity and the ability to context-switch are essential.

Responsibilities:
- Communications & External Engagement (~40%)
- Develop and deliver a communications strategy for the AI initiative’s project portfolio, ensuring that the team’s work is visible, well-understood, and compellingly presented to donors, partners, and the wider global health community.
- Lead the production of high-quality communications outputs across the portfolio, including but not limited to:
- Project briefs, one-pagers, and case studies (e.g., for the FCDO-funded Next GenAI Cures programme, the Wellcome-funded Climate and Health Data Services programme, and PATH’s digital financial services work with AfricaNenda).
- Blog posts, newsletter content, and social media assets that translate technical work into accessible narratives.
- Slide decks and talking points for the Chief AI Officer and other team leads for conferences, donor meetings, and internal briefings.
- Coordinate with PATH’s central communications team and relevant project leads to ensure consistent messaging and branding across the initiative.
- Support the planning and execution of external engagement activities, such as events, webinars, and panel participations, including managing logistics and preparing speakers.
- Monitor the external landscape for relevant developments, publications, and media opportunities, and advise the Chief AI Officer on proactive engagement.
- Strategic & Operational Support (~33%)
- Serve as a trusted operational partner to the Chief AI Officer, helping ensure the initiative runs effectively day to day. This includes:
- Coordinating across the AI leadership team (Deputy Directors for Science, Health, Regulatory Policy, Operations, and Finance) to keep priorities aligned and information flowing.
- Supporting the planning and facilitation of team retreats, away days, and other strategic convenings.
- Helping to manage the initiative’s internal control environment, including working with the Deputy Directors of Operations and Finance to track compliance requirements, flag risks, and ensure that governance processes are followed.
- Drafting agendas, capturing actions, and following up on decisions from leadership meetings.
- Support business development activities by coordinating inputs for proposals, assisting with pipeline tracking, and helping to prepare materials for donor cultivation.
- Act as a sounding board and thought partner for the Chief AI Officer on operational and strategic questions, identifying emerging issues before they become problems.
- Project Management for High-Profile Initiatives (~33%)
- Take direct project management responsibility for discrete, high-profile initiatives led by or closely involving the Chief AI Officer. You will be accountable to the Deputy Director of Operations for these activities.
- The types of activities will vary over time, but examples include:
- Standing up a new partnership or programme from inception through to operational delivery.
- Coordinating a multi-stakeholder consultation or expert convening.
- Managing the delivery of a time-sensitive donor deliverable or strategic report.
- Overseeing the execution of a cross-cutting initiative that spans multiple teams within PATH.
- For each initiative, define scope, develop workplans, manage timelines, coordinate contributors, and ensure quality delivery.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on initiatives you are managing, escalating issues to the Chief AI Officer as needed.
- Ensure compliance with PATH and donor standards (research ethics, data protection, financial controls) on all managed initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience
- Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant field, such as public health, international development, public policy, science communication, or a related discipline.
- At least 5 years of professional experience, with a demonstrable track record across at least two of the following: strategic communications, project management, and operational/programme coordination.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce polished, donor-ready materials under tight deadlines.
- Experience working in or with large, complex, international organisations (nonprofit, multilateral, or government).
- A Versatile Operator... The defining feature of this role is its breadth. You’ll move between writing a case study, chasing down a budget variance, and planning a team retreat, sometimes in the same afternoon. You need to be someone who finds that energising, not exhausting, and who takes pride in making the people around you more effective.
- Communications Instincts... You know how to tell a compelling story about complex, technical work. You can take a dense project document and turn it into a one-pager that a minister or board member would actually read. You understand that good communications isn’t about spin, it’s about clarity, credibility, and knowing your audience.
- Judgement and Discretion... Working this closely with a senior leader means you’ll be privy to sensitive information and involved in decisions before they’re finalised. You exercise good judgement, know when to escalate, and can be trusted to represent the Chief AI Officer’s intent accurately when acting on their behalf.
- Getting Things Done in Complex Environments... PATH has thousands of staff across 70+ countries. Delivering in this environment requires patience, persistence, and strong stakeholder management. You know how to navigate institutional processes without getting stuck in them.
- Intellectual Curiosity... The portfolio spans AI for biomedical science, climate and health data systems, and digital financial inclusion. You don’t need to be a subject-matter expert in all of these, but you do need to be genuinely interested in learning enough to communicate and manage effectively across them.
