An opportunity has arisen for a fully qualified Anatomical Pathology Technician to join the mortuary team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital as the Deputy Mortuary Manager. The post has been established to support the Mortuary Service Manager and work within the team of APTs & MEOs in the organisation of a safe, secure, effective & comprehensive mortuary, post mortem & Medical Examiner's office/service for the needs of the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust & the wider community.

Applicants should hold the RSPH/RIPHH, Certificate & Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (or level 3 & level 4 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology) and ideally have at least 5 years post Diploma/Level 4 mortuary experience. They should be registered with the Academy for Healthcare Sciences and/or possess Science Council Registration and be a member of the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technologists.

They will need a good understanding of medical terminology so they can work with the MEOs to provide a comprehensive service for the bereaved.

The successful candidate will be expected to show a high degree of professionalism, have a compassionate, empathetic and mature attitude and be vigilant of the strict confidentiality policy required for the post. They will also be required to participate in an on‑call rota for out‑of‑hours APT duties.

Main duties of the job

All mortuary staff play a part in the death certification process; the APTs are pivotal to this service by providing technical assistance, dissection skills and input to the post‑mortem examination service. They will also undertake external examinations of deceased as applicable to the Medical Examiner's Services, and where appropriate work alongside the MEOs who provide a conduit for bereaved families. The Chief APT/Deputy Mortuary Manager will assist with all processes relating to handling of the deceased from admission to release, upkeep of records and databases and assist with all post‑mortem room duties as directed by the Service Manager & Pathologist.

Education, Training and Qualifications

  • Level 3 / Certificate in Anatomical Pathology Technology & Level 4 / Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology
  • Substantial post‑qualification experience in line with above qualification timelines
  • Member of the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technologists
  • Management/ leadership qualifications
  • Registered with the Academy for Healthcare Sciences or Science Council
  • Health & Safety training

Experience & Knowledge

  • Significant experience of Anatomical Pathology Technology, advanced autopsy technique, forensic pathology and CT PMs
  • In‑depth knowledge of the Human Tissue Act (HTA) Code of Practice pertaining to the Mortuary sector
  • Knowledge of COSHH
  • Teaching, lecturing and mentoring experience
  • Quality management, document control & audit experience

Skills and Ability

  • Fine motor skills for routine and advanced techniques in anatomical pathology (dissection, evisceration, high‑risk post‑mortem, reconstruction)
  • Ability to write SOPs and training programmes
  • Competency in advanced technique, e.g. eye enucleation, spinal cord removal, exposure or removal of middle ears, pituitary glands, femurs

Communications And Interpersonal Skills

  • Able to communicate sensitive information to distressed families of the deceased, including those with English as a second language

Values and Behaviours

  • Promote positive working relationships with a wide range of professional groups
  • Participate in out‑of‑hours on‑call service
  • Know when to elevate a situation regarding capacity
