Company: NHS Scotland

Location: Glasgow

Posted: May 9th, 2026

Overview

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across clinical and non-clinical roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The Role

The opportunity has arisen for Critical Care at Glasgow Royal Infirmary to consolidate their Senior Charge Nurse Team. Applications are invited from experienced, enthusiastic and innovative candidates interested in developing Intensive Care nursing practice whilst supporting the wellbeing of the team. Critical Care consists of Intensive Care and High Dependency. The units care for a defined patient group who require complex interventions in respiratory (invasive/non-invasive), cardiovascular and renal support. GRI also provides ICU/HDU tertiary support for Plastics, Pancreatitis, Upper GI, Colorectal and specialist Orthopaedic services.

As a team we are committed to delivering a high quality, person-centred service to patients and families. We recognise the vital role the SCN plays in influencing the workforce, so we seek interested individuals with excellent clinical skills and strong leadership ability to guide and support the nursing team clinically, professionally and managerially. As part of the senior nursing team you will have the ability to shape future Critical Care service development and have an impact on care provision, so it is essential that you remain current and reflective in your knowledge base of key local and corporate issues.

The SCN team oversees the everyday management of the entire Critical Care Service, consisting of Surgical High Dependency and Intensive Care. The needs of the wider site increasingly impact patient placement and flow; it is essential that applicants demonstrate awareness of key issues within the overall service. The focus of the role is to prioritise Quality and Assurance agendas. It is essential applicants can demonstrate appropriate knowledge, skills and experience of supporting teams to achieve these goals.

You must possess excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. You should be forward thinking with a strong commitment to personal and professional development and that of colleagues. It is essential that you have previous charge nurse experience and the confidence and ability for sound decision making.
