Play Specialist

• Plan and deliver therapeutic play, preparation and supportive distraction to help children and young people understand, cope with and manage invasive and non invasive healthcare procedures, reducing anxiety and promoting emotional wellbeing.
• Facilitate appropriate play activities to assist the child and family according to the child’s play needs.
• To establish effective communication, both verbal and non-verbal with all members of the multidisciplinary team, parents/carers and the child themselves.
• To provide play-based observations to influence and support the overall assessment of the child.
• To regularly be able to assist with moving and transporting equipment and toys.
• Take responsibility for the selection, monitoring, and ordering of play resources, ensuring they are developmentally appropriate, inclusive, culturally sensitive, and reflective of the needs of children and young people accessing the service.
• Maintain play equipment to a high standard, in accordance with Trust health and safety and infection prevention and control policies, identifying and escalating the need for additional or replacement resources to support safe and effective play provision.
• Acknowledge that the role may involve exposure to potentially distressing situations, including children experiencing pain, distress, or emotional trauma, and demonstrate emotional resilience, reflective practice, and professional self care, seeking support and supervision.
