Job Description:

On behalf of the Vehicle Certification Agency an executive agency of The Department for Transport, we are looking for a Vehicle System Safety Specialist (Inside IR35) for a 2 year hybrid contract based in Bristol or Nuneaton.

As a Vehicle System Safety Specialist, your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead on technical review and approval of documentation submitted by manufacturers and VCA’s Technical Service in support of Safety Management Systems (SMS) Certification.
  • Lead on technical review and approval of documentation submitted by manufacturers and VCA’s Technical Service relating to vehicle type approval of ADAS and ADS.
  • Lead the technical response to vehicle safety incidents, ensure appropriate support for investigation and resolution.
  • Develop and maintain VCA’s technical interpretations on ADAS and ADS regulatory topics.
  • Support technical review activities associated with mutual recognition provisions for ADS Type Approval being performed by other contracting parties.
  • Support cross-governmental policy development on vehicle system safety, and vehicles fitted with complex ADAS and ADS.
  • Experience conducting audits against automotive safety standards (e.g. ISO 26262, ISO 21448).

Background in product development of safety‑critical vehicle systems (e.g. braking, steering, ADAS, ADS).

Strong understanding of system safety engineering principles within automotive or transport environments.

Proven capability to provide technical leadership, oversight, and assurance on engineering activities.

Ability to analyse technical data and make evidence‑based decisions in a regulatory setting.

Degree (or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field. Relevant professional certifications (e.g. ISO 26262, INCOSE, CEng) or significant hands‑on experience in system safety engineering will also be considered.
