Lead Physicist – QA & Dosimetry

We are looking for an experienced individual to join our dynamic, friendly and forward‑thinking team as a Lead Physicist (MPE) in QA & Dosimetry, working under the Head of QA & Dosimetry.

The successful candidate will act as MPE and provide leadership and strategic direction in the QA & Dosimetry area of radiotherapy physics, working closely with the Head of QA & Dosimetry.

Ideally you should have registration as an MPE certificated through RPA 2000, and be a registered Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council. However, those with significant experience currently building an MPE portfolio will be considered.

Radiotherapy Physics provides a comprehensive clinical physics service to University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) providing radiotherapy treatments to the Trust’s population in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. We have 4 Varian linear accelerators (consisting of 1 Halcyon and 3 Truebeam), a superficial X‑Ray unit and a well‑appointed HDR brachytherapy facility. We utilise SGRT for many of our treatment including a tattoo‑free breast technique.

As we enter into an exciting new round of equipment replacement, we are looking to further develop our SABR service, introduce adaptive radiotherapy and increase our activity in research and development. We are aspiring to become an STP training centre and to participate in the Higher Specialist Scientific Training scheme.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as Medical Physics Expert as defined by legislation (currently IRMER 2017), providing expert advice in relation to radiotherapy.
  • Lead as Medical Physics Expert specialising in QA & Dosimetry.
  • Work under the Head of QA & Dosimetry to take responsibility for the associated documented protocols and procedures for this area.
  • Support the development of protocols and competency frameworks for new techniques.
  • Undertake specialist scientific and clinical duties to support all sections of Radiotherapy Physics.
  • Responsible for the QA side of clinical trials.

Person Specification

Education, Training and Qualifications

  • MSc Medical/Radiation Physics or equivalent knowledge to the level of an MSc.
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
  • Honours degree in Physical Science or a relevant equivalent.
  • MPE.
  • Leadership.
  • Management.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Ability to present highly complex technical issues to colleagues including consultant oncologists.
  • Awareness of current and developing technology as relevant to radiotherapy.
  • Good scientific practice.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Experience commensurate with practicing as an MPE.
  • Experience of Varian Treatment Planning System.
  • Medical Statistics.

Skills and Ability

  • Ability to make judgements and decisions affecting patient care based on complex scientific data.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing projects and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to present scientific papers locally and at national conferences.
  • Ability to manage own work, prioritise, delegate and exercise initiative.
  • Awareness of current and developing technology as relevant to radiotherapy.
  • Able to chair technical meetings.
