Deputy Sister / Charge Nurse - Frailty Hub
The Frailty Unit (Loddon Ward) at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital is a busy inpatient ward, caring for frail patients over 65. Main duties of the job
- Take charge of the clinical area and monitor the nursing team in the absence of the Ward Sister.
- Ensure all staff adhere to Trust policies and professional standards, minimise risk, and manage bed allocation.
- Use leadership skills to create a safe and supportive environment, promote effective teamwork, and maintain an efficient workforce.
Hours
Work 37.5 hours per week, spread across the week, including some nights and weekends.

Job responsibilities
- Carry out the daily personal care of patients.
- Take charge of the clinical area in the absence of the Ward/Department Sister/Charge Nurse.
- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, carers, significant others, multidisciplinary team and support services.
- Minimise hazards in the working area and report identifiable hazards to the line manager; adhere to all safe systems of work.
- Assist in the facilitation of clinical supervision.
- Manage complaints in accordance with the Trust's Complaints Procedure.
- Conduct staff appraisal using constructive performance review and establish Personal Development Plans.
- Assist with identification of performance issues and initiate action in conjunction with the Ward Sister / Charge Nurse.
- Participate in the recruitment and selection of nursing staff.
- Monitor the clinical activities of the nursing team and support workers in the absence of the Ward/Department Sister / Charge Nurse.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse on the appropriate part of the NMC register.
Experience
- Significant experience at Band 5 level, including experience in a role relevant to the specialty.
- Experience of managing and leading a clinical area.
Skills
- Competency in advanced clinical skills including enhanced practice.
- Organisational and time‑management skills.
- Effective role model, demonstrating NNUH's PRIDE values.
- Demonstrates understanding and commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
