Staff Nurse - Palliative Care

Band 5 nursing position within the inpatient team of John Eastwood Hospice, a purpose-built 12-bed palliative care unit providing care for patients with complex incurable progressive illness and supporting their family members.
Main duties of the job
The inpatient unit is Consultant‑led and provides care for patients with complex conditions and their families as they approach the end of life. As a staff nurse you will deliver a range of nursing care across the working shift, including but not limited to:
- Symptom management through holistic assessment and medication management.
- Delivery of medication via various routes including intravenous therapy and syringe drivers.
- Personal hygiene and daily care, wound care and pressure area management.
- Support with mobility and rehabilitation.
- Care of patients in the last hours and days of life.
Staff work a rota of 12‑hour shifts across days, nights and weekends. Candidates must be willing to meet this demand.
Job responsibilities
Caring for patients at end of life is physically and emotionally demanding. The role requires resilience, empathy, excellent communication and comfort working in this environment. Additional responsibilities include:
- Accurate record keeping.
- Prioritising workload and planning and evaluating patient care.
- Supporting learning and development of others, including student nurses.
- Coordinating shifts and engaging in multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Undertaking continuous professional development and contributing ideas to improve outcomes.
- Providing support within the Living Well Centre, a day therapy provision.
Person Specification
Qualification
- First level registered nurse with current registration.
- Willingness to undertake training as needed.
- Approved mentor course.
- Specific post‑basic study relating to palliative care.
- Recognised qualification in palliative care or equivalent.
Experience
- Experience as a staff nurse in a relevant adult care setting.
- Experience in palliative care and end of life care.
- Recent experience in a specialist palliative care setting.
- Experience of mentoring students.
- Experience of coordinating in a stand‑alone unit such as a hospice.
- Recent NHS experience.
Knowledge
- Sound clinical skills.
- Prioritising workload and using initiative.
- Team working.
- Clinical supervision experience.
- Experience of using syringe drivers.

Salary
£32,073 to £39,043 a year, pro rata for part time.
