Specialty Doctor in Forensic Psychiatry
This is an exciting opportunity to join the medical team. The post holder will be expected to provide SAS level input into the service.
Responsibilities
- The post holder will be allocated to the inpatient service at the Wells Road Centre and will be allocated to Trent, Seacole and Lister wards. They will be expected to take responsibility for part or all of the relevant inpatient case load (up to 30 patients).
- The post holder will work 10 programmed activities over 5 days, with 8 devoted to Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2 to Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) as per Royal College of Psychiatrists recommendation.
- Weekly psychiatric assessments or reviews of their inpatient caseload (or more often according to clinical need).
- First medical response to psychiatric emergencies and medical seclusion reviews.
- Clerking in new admissions.
- Attendance at multi‑disciplinary ward rounds and CPA meetings.
- Preparation of reports for Mental Health Tribunals, Manager's Hearings, CPAs and the Ministry of Justice; referral letters and correspondence to external agencies; preparation of discharge documentation.
- Management of physical healthcare consequences of psychotropic medication and occasional assessment or management of other physical health presentations when primary care is unavailable or during an emergency during working hours.
- Prospective cover of trainees or career grade doctor colleagues across or within consultant teams to cover annual leave, study leave, carers leave or sick leave.
- Participation in a restrictive practice rota during working hours at Wells Road Centre for seclusion and LTS reviews.
- Depending on experience and competency, the post holder may undertake gate‑keeping assessments under consultant supervision, chair multi‑disciplinary meetings, and give evidence to Mental Health Tribunals or Managers Hearings.
- The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with trainees attached to the service, providing cross‑cover, supervision and guidance.
- Participation in clinical audit and the academic training programme.
- The post holder will be clinically supervised by a Consultant Psychiatrist and line‑managed by the Clinical Director.
- Maintain continuing professional development and submit to annual appraisal.
Qualifications and Training
- Full GMC registration.
- 3 years’ clinical experience in psychiatry.
- Part 1 MRCPsych or equivalent qualification.
- Section 12(2) approval.
Experience
- Experience in working with mentally disordered offenders / forensic psychiatric settings.
- Risk assessment experience and CPA.
- Experience of multi‑disciplinary working.
- Experience of working in NHS.
- Experience of teaching resident doctors and medical students.
