Salary: Up to £65–70k DOE
We are supporting a fast-growing clean technology engineering business developing next-generation high-power DC charging infrastructure for commercial electric vehicles.
Backed by significant industry investment and involved in large-scale electrification programmes, the business is scaling rapidly and is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to help drive the development of megawatt-scale EV charging systems from concept through to production.
This is a high-impact opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineer who enjoys working in a scale-up environment, taking ownership of complex hardware development projects, and mentoring junior engineers while contributing to cutting-edge electrification technology.
The Role
You will play a key role in the development of in-house high-power DC charging hardware, working across the full product lifecycle including concept generation, detailed design, validation, manufacturing support, and deployment.
The role sits at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering and will involve close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to deliver robust, production-ready infrastructure products.
This opportunity would suit someone with experience developing complex electromechanical hardware products, ideally within EV charging, power electronics, energy infrastructure, or related sectors.
Key Responsibilities
Product Development & Delivery
- Lead mechanical design activities across the full product lifecycle
- Develop solutions optimised for manufacture, assembly, cost, and reliability
- Produce accurate 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings
- Lead design reviews, DFMEA activities, and validation planning
- Drive continuous product improvement initiatives for robustness and cost reduction
- Work closely with project and engineering teams to deliver against programme timelines
System Integration & Technical Support
- Collaborate with electrical, embedded software, manufacturing, and infrastructure teams
- Support prototype builds, integration activities, and product deployment
- Troubleshoot technical issues using structured problem-solving methodologies
- Support supplier engagement, component selection, and qualification activities
Validation, Compliance & Quality
- Define and execute validation and verification plans
- Support environmental, thermal, and functional testing activities
- Contribute to product compliance and technical documentation
- Ensure designs align with applicable industry standards and regulations
Process & Team Development
- Help establish and improve engineering processes, standards, and documentation
- Contribute to engineering best practices and product roadmap planning
- Mentor and support junior engineers within the team
- Operate effectively within a fast-paced scale-up environment with evolving priorities
Experience & Skills Required
Essential
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- Extensive experience in hardware/product development environments
- Strong background designing electromechanical systems or infrastructure hardware
- Advanced Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD 2D experience
- Experience integrating third-party electrical components and sub-systems
- Ability to lead development workstreams independently
- Strong understanding of DFM, DFA, and engineering validation processes
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Highly Desirable
- Experience developing high-power DC EV charging infrastructure
- Experience with charging hardware OEMs, startups, or scale-up environments
- Knowledge of panel enclosure design
- Familiarity with EV charging standards including IEC61851 and IEC61439
- Understanding of EMC compliance and electrical regulations
- Experience conducting FEA and thermal analysis
- Experience supporting utility providers or electrical infrastructure integration
