An opportunity has arisen for a Principal Test Engineer to join a leading defence engineering team supporting the development of complex electronic systems across major programmes, including missile and platform-based systems.
The role focuses on defining and improving test strategy, test architecture, and design-for-test approaches to improve system reliability, diagnostic capability, and production efficiency across the full lifecycle from concept through to in-service support.
This position sits within a specialist Test & Testability function and works closely with design, systems, and production engineering teams to ensure effective, efficient, and robust test solutions are built into products from the outset.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to and develop test strategies across complex defence electronic systems
- Define and support test architecture and Built-In Test (BIT) requirements across projects
- Drive Design for Test (DfT) and testability improvements at system and sub-system level
- Support definition and refinement of test equipment requirements and specifications
- Analyse production and in-service test data to identify failures, trends, and improvement opportunities
- Support development of diagnostic models and test coverage analysis approaches
- Work closely with design and systems engineering teams to improve overall system testability
- Contribute to technical reviews, including structured challenge of test approaches and assumptions
- Support continuous improvement of test processes, methods, and engineering standards
- Contribute to bid and early-phase programme activities where required
- Mentor and support junior engineers within the Test & Testability function
Required Experience
- Strong background in electronic test engineering within complex systems environments
- Experience across multiple stages of the engineering lifecycle (design, integration, verification, production, or support)
- Knowledge of electronic systems, circuit behaviour, and failure analysis techniques
- Experience with test equipment requirements and specification development
- Understanding of Design for Test (DfT) and system testability principles
- Experience working with complex or safety-critical systems (defence, aerospace, automotive, rail, medical, etc.)
- Ability to analyse test data and identify system-level faults or trends
- Experience working with engineering stakeholders to influence technical decisions
- Strong communication skills and ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams
Desirable Experience
- Exposure to Built-In Test (BIT) design or implementation
- Experience working within defence or other highly regulated engineering sectors
- Knowledge of diagnostic modelling or test coverage techniques
- Experience supporting technical reviews or structured engineering challenge sessions
Requirements
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
- Experience in test engineering across complex electronic systems
- Eligibility for UK Security Clearance (British Citizenship or Dual UK Nationality required)
- Willingness to travel within the UK and Europe when required
