About the Role
We are seeking a Deputy Buildings & Technical Manager to play a key role within the venue’s management team. Supporting the Buildings & Technical Manager, you will help lead the technical function, ensuring the smooth delivery of all productions, events, and building operations.
This is a hands-on leadership role, combining technical delivery with team management, maintenance oversight, and health & safety compliance. You will contribute to maintaining high artistic standards while ensuring a safe, efficient, and well-maintained environment for performers, staff, and audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Operations
- Act as a key point of contact for visiting companies and artists, ensuring all technical requirements are delivered to a high standard
- Support day-to-day management of the technical department, including scheduling, rota planning, and budget monitoring
- Oversee technical delivery across lighting, sound, AV, staging, and rigging
- Provide hands-on technical support during performances and events where required
- Assist with production settlements, including technical recharges
- Deputise for the Buildings & Technical Manager when required, including involvement in in-house productions and major seasonal events
Building & Maintenance
- Support delivery of a proactive Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programme
- Assist in ensuring compliance with statutory regulations (e.g. lifting equipment, electrical safety, fire safety, water hygiene)
- Liaise with contractors, suppliers, and relevant authorities
- Support delivery of maintenance and capital projects, ensuring works are completed safely, on time, and within budget
- Maintain accurate records of servicing, inspections, and compliance
People Leadership & Development
- Supervise and support a team of technical staff and casual crew
- Assist with recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and development planning
- Support training and skills development across the department
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture
Health & Safety & Compliance
- Promote and implement health & safety policies and best practices
- Prepare and review risk assessments and method statements
- Contribute to health & safety meetings and wider compliance initiatives
- Support emergency planning and incident response
- Ensure safe systems of work are followed by all staff and visiting companies
About You
You are a proactive and detail-oriented technical professional with a passion for live events and theatre. Comfortable working both strategically and hands-on, you bring strong leadership skills and a collaborative approach to team management.
You thrive in a fast-paced environment, balancing technical delivery, operational oversight, and safety compliance, while maintaining high standards of service and production quality.
Experience Required
- At least 2 years’ experience in a senior technical or technical management role
- Proven experience leading and developing teams
- Strong technical knowledge across lighting, sound, staging, and rigging
- Experience managing health & safety processes and compliance
- Understanding of building maintenance within a live events or venue environment
- Ability to carry out manual handling tasks safely
Desirable Skills & Qualifications
- Health & Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH or NEBOSH)
- IPAF, PASMA, or Working at Height certification
- Experience managing refurbishment or capital projects
- Knowledge of counterweight flying systems
- Familiarity with industry-standard lighting, sound, and AV systems
- Awareness of sustainability practices within venue operations
