Your next role

This key supervisory role supports the effective, safe and compliant management of waste disposal operations across Council depots and sites. Reporting to the Service Manager – Depot and Disposal, you will be responsible for coordinating day‑to‑day site activities, supervising staff and contractors, and ensuring that waste materials are processed safely, efficiently and in line with regulatory requirements.

You will oversee operational activity on site, ensuring health and safety is prioritised at all times and that buildings, infrastructure and public areas are well maintained and used effectively. You will support contract management, procurement activity and budget monitoring, while identifying opportunities for efficiency, commercial income and service improvement.

Working closely with colleagues and partners, you will monitor performance against KPIs, maintain accurate compliance records, respond to customer and member enquiries and support audits, inspections and investigations. You will also play a key role in supervising, training and developing staff and promoting a positive safety and performance culture.

We are seeking an experienced supervisor with a background in waste, environmental services or a similar operational environment. You will have strong knowledge of health and safety and regulatory compliance, experience managing staff and contractors, and the ability to organise resources effectively. A qualification in waste management or health and safety (such as WAMITAB or NEBOSH) is desirable. You will bring sound judgement, strong communication skills and a proactive, solutions‑focused approach.

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).

As an employee, you will receive a diverse and exciting environment in which to work, encouraging creativity and innovation whilst recognising the need to support ongoing personal development and a flexible work life balance.

For Swindon to thrive in the future, we need to lay the foundations now. It’s why our regeneration and transformation programmes are already underway. So, you’ll be joining us at an exciting time on our journey. We’ll look to you to share your knowledge, influence decisions and drive real, positive change. With your contributions, we’ll achieve our vision of a prosperous, re‑vitalised Swindon together. And you’ll be proud to say it was made better with you.

Potential applicants are sometimes put off if they don’t meet 100% of the requirements. We think individual experience, skills and passion make all the difference, so if you meet the majority of the criteria, we’d love to hear from you.
