Southampton City Council is seeking a motivated and community-focused individual to join our frontline Community Safety team, helping to keep the city clean, safe and welcoming for everyone.
In this role you will work across the city, including the city centre and council-owned car parks to deter and investigate unattended or abandoned items, support street cleanliness, and provide a highly visible presence that reassures residents, visitors and businesses. You will engage positively with members of the public, including vulnerable people experiencing homelessness, and signpost them to appropriate support services.
This role includes shift working. Currently the shifts are 04:30 – 12:30 and 10:00 – 17:30.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrolling public areas and council car parks
- Assessing and removing unattended or abandoned items and waste
- Providing reassurance and responding to public concerns
- Recording visits, intelligence and daily reports
- Engaging with vulnerable individuals and referring to support agencies
- Supporting enforcement and behaviour‑change activity
- Operating vehicles, equipment and plant safely and legally
- Responding to reports of unauthorised encampments

- Confidence working in a public‑facing, enforcement‑related role
- A calm, professional and empathetic approach
- Willingness to work outdoors and undertake manual tasks

Full training will be provided, including accreditation under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS).

Salary
The salary band for this role is £32,061 – £36,362. The starting salary is £32,061 with annual progression through the salary bands.
