We are seeking to recruit highly motivated and clinically focussed individuals as Consultants in Adult Emergency Medicine. The successful candidates will join our existing team of 21 consultants. The team are committed to improving and advancing the quality of Emergency Care and deliver excellent training available locally and nationally. The successful candidate will work within a well-established and supportive multidisciplinary team. You will be based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary Adult ED, part of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW).
Main duties of the job
UHBW is one of the busiest EDs in the South West, seeing 80,000 adults per year. The ED attendances at the BRI are of high acuity and reflect the broad spectrum attending an inner-city ED, with an average of 220 attendances per day. UHBW also serves as a large tertiary referral centre for many specialities such as cardiology and cardiac surgery with 24-hour Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) available and operating as a Cardiac Arrest Centre. BRI ED is a Trauma Unit part of the Severn Major Trauma Network (SMTN), which coordinates Major Trauma services across the former Avon area as well as parts of Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. We have fantastic working relationships across our Urgent Care teams, working dynamically across all the assessment units (Acute Medical Unit, Older Persons Assessment Unit and Surgical Trauma Assessment Unit and Same Day Emergency Care Units) to deliver excellent care at the front door. Our ED is an academic department teaching medical students, and all members of the MDT including HSTs, ACPs, EPs, CESR, ACCS, GPSTs and Clinical Fellows. The Emergency Department has recently scored consistently 'Good/Excellent' for Higher Specialist Training and 'Excellent' for GP Training. We have also come a respectable 9th across the country for patient experience (GMC).

Job responsibilities
Join a dynamic multidisciplinary team of senior medical, nursing, and management staff delivering and advancing high-quality Emergency Care across South, West, and Northwest Bristol. This busy inner-city Emergency Department manages over 220 patients daily, offering a broad and complex case mix. The role involves providing senior clinical presence on the shop floor from 08:00 to 00:00, seven days a week, with additional on-call responsibilities.
The appointee will lead the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients in the adult Emergency Department and contribute to care within the ED Observation Unit. Close collaboration with Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), ICU, and specialty teams is essential to ensure seamless, patient-centred care. Emergency staff retain responsibility for immediate care, while ongoing management is coordinated with relevant specialties.
The post includes leadership responsibilities during major incidents and supports emergency admissions under on-call specialty teams. As part of a Regional Cardiac Centre and Trauma Unit, the department manages acute cardiac cases, including out-of-hospital arrests, and stabilises major trauma prior to transfer when required.
Applicants must hold, or be close to obtaining, CCT in Emergency Medicine or equivalent GMC specialist registration, and demonstrate commitment to clinical excellence, teamwork, teaching, and service development.

Qualifications & Training
- Fully registered with GMC.
- Certification of completion of specialist training (CCT) (or equivalent, OR Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview
- Candidates can be within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview. Please note this does not apply to CESR applications
- Must be on the GMC's Specialist Register to start Consultant appointment
- Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent
Experience
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Emergency Medicine
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
- Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust's service strategy
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
- Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
- Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
- Broad range of IT skills
Clinical Governance and Audit
- Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
