St Leonard’s Hospice is looking for a new Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse to join the Inpatient Unit to support the clinical team to deliver excellent care to our patients, placing them at the heart of what we do.
This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week, 5 days over 7, Monday to Friday and be a part of the clinical on-call rota.
Main duties of the job
As Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse, your duties will include:
- Demonstrating leadership through clinical expertise, delivering high standards of person-centred care as and when needed
- Working within the multidisciplinary team to develop a culture of reflective practice
- Managing risk and balancing demands that come up in the service
- Being responsible for driving ongoing service development to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our diverse local population
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Experience of working clinically including excellent nursing skills, record keeping and medicines management
- Experience as a senior nurse on a busy unit/ ward, being responsible for leading and managing a team
- A good knowledge of palliative and end of life care
- High levels of motivation, be dynamic and passionate about hospice care

You will provide clinical leadershipand management support to create and maintain a positive culture, with a focuson continuous improvement. Providing visionary and visible leadership and guidanceto all the team.
Mainduties and responsibilities
Professional
- 1.Maintaina high profile across the In Patient Unit to role model expertise in theclinical management of patients with complex needs. Delivering hands onpatient care as needed.
- 2.Ensurethe patient/loved ones voice is heard providing or arranging advocacy asrequired.
- 3.Act as first point of contact in the event of acomplaint or feedback about patent and loved ones experiences on the ward.
- 4.Maintainhigh standards of palliative care are delivered holistically to patients andtheir loved ones within a multi-disciplinary team approach.
- 5.Assess,plan and evaluate nursing care, maintaining accurate, legible documentation andcommunicating necessary information to all team members.
- 6.Participatefully in the setting, implementation and monitoring of formal standards ofpractice and to be responsible for Clinical Governance and auditing for theservice to ensure robust evidence of how we are meeting the CQC requirements,NICE guidelines etc.
- 7.Collaboratewith the multi-disciplinary teams with bed management, prioritising patients onthe waiting list for admission and have a responsibility for the allocation ofbeds and timeliness of patient flow.
Managerial
- 1.Actas a leader of change and innovation. Provide leadership for the service whichconsists of nurses, health care assistants, allied health professionals andvolunteers.
- 2.As a senior lead within the Hospice, be part of theclinical senior leadership team covering all core activities and possibly bedeployed across all clinical teams to suit business needs.
- 3.Ensurethe service is covered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is maintained at thecorrect establishment and appropriate skill mix.
- 4.Developa team which is motivated, works in line with organisational values and hasclear direction.
- 5.Identifyand promote good practices in palliative care with the development and regularreview of operational policies and procedures.
- 6.Ensureoptimum use of resources within the IPU budget.
- 7.Assistin the recruitment, selection, development of the team and to supervise theinduction of new staff within the Inpatient Unit service.
- 8.Takethe lead with the clinical audit process liaising closely with the DeputyDirector of Clinical Services and other members of the multi-disciplinary teamto achieve this.
- 9.Takeresponsibility for safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance withHospice procedures and the law, reporting errors without delay.
- 10.Participate in and manage the Clinical on Call rota across clinicalservices.
- 11.Work closely with housekeeping and maintenance teams to ensure a highstandard of service to the ward area.
- 12.Teachas required on internal/external study days/courses.
