Electrical Project Engineer – United Utilities AMP8

Overview

Costain has won extensive work across the water sector to support United Utilities in delivering £5.5bn of projects in the Asset Management Period 8 (2025‑2030) and AMP9 (2030‑2035) across the North West and Cumbria region. This role supports the delivery of electrical aspects of design and build schemes, from outline design through to commissioning and handover, across the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote health, safety and wellbeing in all design and delivery activities.
  • Manage electrical packages, design, installation and coordination.
  • Support HAZOP/HAZCON and wider project meetings.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to develop robust construction sequences, programme and budget.
  • Coordinate pre‑construction, delivery and wider teams to develop compliant, safe solutions.
  • Champion high‑quality delivery and develop processes and initiatives to drive quality and right‑first‑time culture.
  • Maintain good working relationships with site operating teams, supply chain partners and wider stakeholders.
  • Provide accurate and timely project performance reports, ensuring contract requirements are met and mitigation plans implemented.
  • Ensure appropriate permits, records and checks are undertaken through installation to meet contract requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Costain framework team to support efficient delivery and continuous improvement.

Essential Qualifications

  • Relevant engineering or project management qualification.
  • CSCS card.
  • Driving licence.
  • Experience delivering electrical packages across the project lifecycle in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to engage and build strong relationships with stakeholders, motivating, influencing and striving for mutual success.
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant regulations including CEMR, the Costain Way Requirements for temporary works, lifting, commissioning and handover.
  • Able to understand relevant engineering technical standards.
  • Package management experience and contract awareness to manage subcontract teams effectively.
  • Solution‑focused and passionate about improving performance through best practice and continuous improvement.
  • Able to work and learn quickly in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
  • Commitment to delivering high quality outcomes.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond rapidly to unexpected events.

Desirable

  • Water industry experience.
  • Bio‑resources experience.
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary teams across multiple locations.
  • Experience working with both construction and design teams.
