Lawyer – Criminal Litigation & Licensing

Position Type: Permanent

Grade D – £45,091 – £53,460 (Consultation grade – subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review)

Working Hours: 36.5 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a legal advisor to ensure compliance with statutory duties and obligations, protecting the best interests of the Council.
  • Prepare, negotiate and advise on all aspects relating to legal cases.
  • Attend courts, tribunals, public inquiries or other meetings, undertaking advocacy where required.
  • Represent clients in negotiations and discussions and instruct external legal services where necessary.
  • Conduct and manage a wide-ranging caseload of both straightforward and complex legal work.
  • Prepare reports for and attend Committees, Sub‑Committees and the Executive Committee as required.
  • Support the Legal Services Management Team in meeting practice‑management requirements and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, maintaining high service standards.
  • Serve as a proactive and innovative legal advisor, providing high‑quality, professional advice and representing the City Council in legal proceedings and meetings.

Requirements

You will need to possess a current practising certificate as a Solicitor/Chartered Legal Executive or be a member of the Bar who has completed pupillage/registered as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives.
