Design & Development Engineer
Cambridge | Contract until end of 2026 | £476.90 per day
The Opportunity
An exciting contract opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Design & Development Engineer to support the development of innovative drug delivery devices across a growing product pipeline.
You will play a key role in the design, analysis, and optimisation of high-volume medical devices, working from early prototype through to commercialisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform technical assessments of drug delivery devices, including:
- Tolerance analysis
- Functional and performance modelling
- FEA simulations
- Develop detailed component and system designs using 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Produce engineering drawings from concept through to production tooling
- Support Design for Manufacture (DFM/DFMA) reviews to ensure efficient production
- Collaborate with suppliers to source and optimise components (e.g. moulded parts)
- Contribute to material selection and evaluation for device components
- Ensure compliance with internal Quality Management Systems
- Support investigation and reporting of technical issues, complaints, or adverse events
Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience developing high-volume products, ideally within:
- Medical devices
- Drug delivery
- Regulated manufacturing environments
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Solid understanding of core engineering principles:
- Mechanics
- Kinematics
- Thermodynamics
- Materials science
- Experience with tolerance analysis and DFMA principles
- Knowledge of assembly processes and manufacturing techniques
- Familiarity with quality control and risk management in regulated environments
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills
Qualifications
- Degree, MSc or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
