Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineer – Controlled Environments
East Midlands | Permanent | c.£45-55K (DOE)
Do you want to design systems that control heat, light and humidity for cutting-edge applications? Are you frustrated by repetitive project work and want to influence innovation and product development? Looking for a role where you can challenge the status quo and improve how things are designed and built?
We are partnering with a specialist engineering manufacturer of controlled environment systems used across life sciences, plant growth and regulated industries.
They are looking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a small, highly experienced team — someone who can act as a catalyst for change, bringing fresh ideas and improving design capability.
The Opportunity
This is a varied role combining project delivery and product innovation. You’ll be designing components and systems, working on bespoke projects while also helping shape the next of products.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Designing sheet metal and electro-mechanical assemblies using 3D CAD
- Developing systems involving airflow, heating, cooling and ventilation
- Supporting projects from concept through to installation and commissioning
- Driving value engineering and design for manufacture (DFM)
- Working closely with suppliers, manufacturing and project teams
- Challenging existing designs and improving performance and cost efficiency
What They’re Looking For
- Experience in mechanical design within HVAC, building services, process equipment or similar
- Strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks, Inventor or similar)
- Background in sheet metal or fabricated assemblies
- A proactive mindset – someone who will challenge, improve and innovate
Why Consider This Role?
- Opportunity to influence both projects and product development
- Small, collaborative engineering team with real autonomy
- Work across sectors including life sciences and advanced environments
- Clear progression into more senior technical or project roles
- A business open to new ideas and continuous improvement
If you’re a Mechanical Design Engineer looking for a role with more variety, ownership and innovation, apply now.
