The opportunity
As a Process Engineer, you will work as part of the Printed Circuit Card Assembly (PCBA) manufacturing business unit with a focus on the manufacture of our products. The Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) Business unit produces high‑complexity products with a high mix, low volume output. The business unit is rapidly growing to meet a large backlog of orders over the next 5‑10 years, with production outputs more than tripling.
You will be part of the process engineering team working closely with test, manufacturing and quality engineers while building strong relationships with stakeholders including operations, design support and calibration and maintenance teams. This role reports to the Principal Process Engineer within the CCA business unit.
The Role
You will be responsible for various technical aspects of PCBA. This will involve creating and maintaining standards, identifying and carrying out continuous improvement activities, solving technical problems, all whilst considering quality as intrinsic to the role. The opportunity also allows you to grow your knowledge within manufacturing as part of development into future opportunities. Industrial Validation, manufacturing architecture and factory of the future are some of the work packages that can provide stretch objectives for such growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting the manufacturing area in its growth and rate increase.
- Carrying out improvement activities – data gathering and analysis to understand impact and effort required.
- Supporting the Non‑Conformance process – root cause analyses, implementation of effective corrective and preventative actions.
- Interface with the design authority during the product development phase to ensure optimised Design for Manufacture (DfM) and in the production phase for management of change implementation. This includes supporting the New Product Introduction team in creating/improving design rules for manufacturability of circuit cards.
- Ensuring processes and equipment contribute to a safe working environment following both company processes and legal obligations, meeting internal quality requirements.
- Developing and maintaining manufacturing methods, processes and equipment with a data‑based approach, using methods such as SPC, to support a robust manufacturing system.
- Resolving issues and queries with the operations team on the shop floor.
- Performing and reviewing PFMEAs.
- Developing tooling to aid the manufacturing process.
- Creating and modifying machine programmes for the assembly, manufacture or inspection of circuit cards.
What we're looking for from you
- An understanding and appreciation for quality control.
- Analytical mindset with the willingness to learn.
- Proficiency in computer and internet use, including commonly used applications such as Microsoft Office Suite and manufacturing systems such as ERP and Manufacturing Execution System.
- Experience in Circuit Card Manufacturing or Design is beneficial.
- Knowledge of PCBA Processes and Technologies is beneficial.
- A proactive approach to process improvements.
QUALIFICATIONS (Must Have)
- Formal technical Engineering/Craft Apprenticeship to NVQ Level 3/TR23/TR21
- Formal further education certificate to HND or equivalent in a relevant subject
ALTERNATIVELY
- BEng/BSc in relevant Engineering/Technical Degree
