SWHEA was established to manage the Saltaire Collection of historical objects for Shipley College who hold it in trust for the community.

The Collection consists of over 7,000 objects, plans, documents, maps, and images that support interpretation of Saltaire’s history, and is currently housed in a designated space, within Shipley College’s Exhibition Building’s Learning Resource Centre. Access to the collection is therefore by appointment at present. It’s day-to-day care, conservation and management is organised by committed and experienced volunteers supported by trustees.

SWHEA have recently received a National Heritage Lottery Fund Grant to initiate the ‘Opening Up the Saltaire Collection’ project which will enable the following:

  • What impact has the project had on the communities themselves and their engagement with heritage
  • How has the project changed the Collection’s identification of heritage that is relevant to diverse audiences
  • Has the project changed future interpretations of Saltaire’s heritage
