The Opportunity
A leading advisory firm is seeking an Audit of Tax Assistant Manager to join its specialist Tax practice, based in either Reading or Gatwick. The firm is particularly keen to speak with newly qualified ACA auditors who are looking to transition from financial audit into a tax-focused audit and reporting role.
This position offers an excellent opportunity to build technical expertise in tax accounting, tax provisioning, and tax risk, while leveraging an existing audit background. The client is known for delivering technically complex work and for supporting career transitions into specialist tax roles.
The Role
The Audit of Tax Assistant Manager will work closely with the audit teams, tax specialists, and clients to deliver high-quality tax audit and tax reporting work. The role focuses on the audit of tax balances and disclosures, with exposure to tax compliance or tax advisory.
The successful candidate will gain exposure to a wide range of clients, including listed groups, international organisations, and complex owner‑managed businesses, with a strong emphasis on UK GAAP and IFRS tax reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Audit of Tax & Tax Reporting
- Auditing and reviewing current and deferred tax balances within statutory accounts
- Evaluating tax provisions and disclosures under:
- UK GAAP
- IFRS
- Reviewing tax‑related disclosures for technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance
- Assessing tax risks, uncertain tax positions, and tax‑related controls
- Supporting wider audit teams on tax technical matters during year‑end audits
Technical & Analytical Work
- Applying tax legislation and accounting standards to complex factual scenarios
- Working alongside tax compliance and advisory teams where required, whilst maintaining an audit‑focused perspective
- Supporting the tax accounting aspects of transactions such as acquisitions and restructurings from a reporting and audit standpoint
Client & Stakeholder Management
- Acting as a key day‑to‑day contact for clients and internal audit teams on tax audit matters
- Communicating tax accounting concepts clearly to finance teams and non‑tax stakeholders
- Building strong working relationships with client finance functions and senior stakeholders
Team & Development
- Coaching and supporting junior team members
- Managing workloads, deadlines, and engagement delivery
- Contributing to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the Audit of Tax team
Experience and Criteria
- ACA qualification (newly qualified or recently qualified)
- Background in external audit (Big 4 or Top 10 experience preferred, but not essential)
- Strong understanding of UK GAAP and/or IFRS
- A clear interest in developing a long‑term career in Audit of Tax / Tax in general
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- The ability to communicate confidently with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
Prior specialist of tax is advantageous but not essential, as full technical development and support will be provided.
