Senior Design Engineer

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will shape the delivery of highway maintenance and improvement schemes, from early concept through to construction and handover. You will combine hands‑on design with technical leadership, working closely with delivery teams, partners, and stakeholders to create safe, practical, and well‑coordinated solutions that make a real impact on local infrastructure.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the planning and delivery of highway schemes, from early involvement through construction and completion.
- Develop and review highway designs, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Coordinate designers, subcontractors, and internal teams to achieve smooth project delivery.
- Manage programmes, costs, risks, and progress to support informed decision making.
- Ensure designs and works meet relevant standards, policies, and local authority requirements.
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and support within the design team.
- Engage with clients, authorities, utilities, and stakeholders to resolve constraints early.
- Support safe working practices through robust planning and clear technical input.
Essential skills and requirements
- Strong background in highway engineering and infrastructure scheme delivery.
- Sound understanding of highway standards, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with changing priorities and constraints.
- Confident communicator with technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and common design or project management tools.
- Experience interpreting utility information and statutory constraints.
- Collaborative approach with a focus on buildable, practical solutions.
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
