Role – Senior Costs Lawyer

Salary - £100k

Location – London (Remote)

We are excited to announce a new opportunity to join our highly regarded Costs team. To be considered, you will currently be an experienced Costs Solicitor with at least 5 years’ PQE, looking for the next step in your career and the opportunity to play a key role in the continued growth of our London presence.

The role

This is a unique opportunity combining high-level technical costs work with a strong business development focus. Working remotely from London, you will act as a senior representative of the Costs team in the London market while remaining closely integrated with our established Leeds-based team.

The successful candidate will manage a smaller, high-quality caseload of complex technical costs matters, working largely on instructions generated through the Leeds team. Alongside this, a significant proportion of the role will focus on building and strengthening relationships in the London market, developing new workstreams, and supporting the wider strategic growth of the team.

The current Head of Department has been leading much of the London-facing activity and is now looking for a senior second-in-command to help expand the team’s presence and capability in the capital.

The caseload split is anticipated to be approximately:

  • 50% technical costs work
  • 50% business development, networking, and strategic growth activity

There is genuine scope for the successful individual to build and develop a London-based team over time, supported by the wider business and leadership team.

What we are looking for

We are considering applications from experienced senior costs lawyers who want to be part of an ambitious and growing national team. You will ideally have:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ PQE as a qualified solicitor or Costs Lawyer
  • Strong technical expertise across a broad range of contentious costs matters
  • Experience handling complex costs disputes and high-value matters with minimal supervision
  • Confidence managing your own caseload and client relationships
  • Strong commercial awareness and a genuine interest in business development and relationship management
  • Excellent communication and networking skills
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior team members

Desirable experience includes:

  • Experience dealing with matters before the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT)
  • Existing London market relationships and profile within the costs arena
  • Experience contributing to strategic team growth initiatives

To thrive within the firm, you will need to be motivated, collaborative, commercially minded and comfortable working both autonomously and as part of a wider national team.

The team

The Costs team is a well-established and highly regarded national practice comprising 33 specialists led by an experienced Head of Department. The team handles a broad range of complex and high-value costs matters across multiple practice areas and continues to experience strong growth.

Collaboration is central to the way the team operates, with technical excellence and client service at the heart of everything they do. This role represents an exciting opportunity to help shape and expand the team’s London offering.

Working arrangements

The role is based in London with fully remote/agile working arrangements. Regular collaboration with the Leeds-based team will form part of the role, with occasional travel as required.

Working at the firm

The firm has an excellent reputation as an employer of choice and its culture is vital to its continued success. The business genuinely cares for its employees and invests heavily in developing talented individuals.

In exchange for your efforts, you can expect:

  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, and your birthday off (with the option to buy or sell holiday)
  • Private Health scheme
  • Profit share scheme
  • Volunteer days
  • Pension and Life Assurance
  • Generous family-friendly leave
  • An array of wellbeing benefits, including wellness and mental health programmes
  • A wide range of additional benefits such as Perkbox, reduced travel/parking charges and cycle to work schemes

There is also genuine long-term opportunity attached to this position, including the potential to build and lead a London-based costs team as the practice continues to grow.
