Technical Director – Geotechnics

The Opportunity
We are looking for a Technical Director to join our Geotechnics Consulting team and act as a technical specialist and subject‑matter expert within the Geotechnical discipline. The role will provide direction and supervision to technical teams, operational managers, clients and suppliers, both across the UK and in a multidisciplinary environment.
The role
As a Technical Director you will act as a technical specialist and subject‑matter expert, directing the actions of technical teams across the UK, supporting a technical excellence agenda and, when required, undertaking people‑manager responsibilities.
Responsibilities include
- Act as a technical specialist and subject‑matter expert providing direction, guidance and supervision to technical teams, operational managers, clients and suppliers.
- Lead and direct the preparation and checking of geotechnical designs, calculations, drawings and documentation to deliver scheme deliverables that meet quality, cost and programme criteria.
- Take responsibility for the commercial success of projects within the portfolio, controlling budgets and managing associated costs.
- Liaise with client and supplier representatives at director level, including presenting proposals.
- Identify opportunities for technical initiatives and sponsor their development.
- Lead the preparation of geotechnical bids and the general work‑winning function, including the role of bid director.
- Work on site on a visiting or temporary basis, including out of hours work.
- Assume people‑manager responsibilities when required by the business.
What you will bring to us
- Strong evidence of using a personal external network for business benefit, for example during the bidding process.
- Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence, gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned (Geological Society or ICE) or Fellowship, held or to be obtained within six months of commencement.
Skills
- Apply deep expertise of engineering theory and principles to novel situations requiring first‑principles solutions.
- Understand and experience geotechnical design and specification processes, capable of managing others and acting as Design Team Lead for both minor and major projects.
- Highly experienced with relevant geotechnical software and analytical tools, with the ability to validate and approve new tools.
- Excellent knowledge of geotechnical suppliers and the services they provide, maintained through regular contact.
- Excellent oral communication skills, able to present arguments and ideas clearly to peers, senior colleagues and clients, and deliver internal training workshops.
- Deep understanding of CDM and risk assessment, experienced in managing and communicating hazards and risks, ensuring appropriate mitigation and transference; capable of acting as Principal Designer for all projects.
- Great ability to resolve interface clashes and manage interfaces within the discipline.
- Supervisory and people‑management skills, capable of directing technical teams regardless of location or account and undertaking people‑manager responsibilities when required.
Technical competencies
- Track record of managing project‑related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g., Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
- Capable of acting as engineering lead for a project under terms of commission, such as Contractor’s Engineering Manager or Contractor’s Responsible Engineer for Network Rail schemes.
