Advanced Clinical Practitioner

This role assists in the delivery of respiratory services at the NorthWest Regional Spinal Injury Centre, providing comprehensive care for patients with spinal cord injury across the UK.
Responsibilities
- Take a proactive role within the weaning and ventilation team based at NWRSIC.
- Read and provide highly specialist weaning and ventilatory advice for patients admitted with SCI to support their clinical management.
- Develop outstanding evidence‑based practice for the management of patients with weaning and ventilatory needs following spinal cord injury.
- Communicate effectively with treating clinicians, patients and families from admission through discharge.
- Attend regular meetings to identify appropriate rehabilitation or care pathways on an individual patient basis.
- Enhance skills in managing invasive and non‑invasive ventilation, sleep investigations, and related treatments.
- Promote a clinical environment that supports high‑quality patient care and high service‑delivery standards.
Job duties (advanced practitioner)
- Take a lead role in advanced clinical assessment and treatment of spinal cord injured patients with complex presentations.
- Work independently and autonomously, determining clinical diagnosis and treatments and maintaining digital and written records.
- Collaborate with respiratory and multi‑disciplinary teams, including community‑based teams, spinal medical consultants and case‑management teams.
- Provide clinical expertise and leadership, developing and sharing best practice within the organisation and externally.
- Advance scope of practice beyond the primary profession as directed by the Non‑Medical lead for Ventilation.
- Manage a clinical caseload to an advanced professional standard using theoretical and practical knowledge.
Qualifications
- Diploma / Degree in Physiotherapy / Nursing
- HCPC / NMC registered
- Membership or participation in special interest groups / networks
- Master's Degree or equivalent experience relevant to the area of clinical practice
- Post‑registration experience in the specialist field
- Completed a suitable communications course
Knowledge & Experience
- Significant demonstrable experience in an acute care setting, including senior level management of teams.
- Specialist expertise underpinned by theory through CPD.
- Excellent clinical reasoning / clinical decision‑making skills.
- Knowledge of clinical risk management and governance.
Skills & Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation and persuasion skills.
- Evidence of involvement in the development of care programmes, protocols and guidelines.
- Tracheostomy theoretical and practical knowledge.
- Invasive ventilation, NIV therapy, CPAP and care competence (theory and practice).
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Decision‑making effectiveness.
- Interpretation of diagnostic tests.
- Rapport building with colleagues, patients and relatives.
- Strong leadership and team‑building skills.
- Initiative and self‑direction.
- Ability to work autonomously or within a team.
- Ability to manage demanding and challenging workload.
Other
- Perform intricate physical procedures such as arterial blood gas sampling and chest physiotherapy.
