Main duties of the job

The Integrated Specialist Services provides specialist NHS services to people for whom mainstream services cannot meet their demands. We seek a Staff Nurse to join our Inpatient Assessment & Treatment Team with IDD at the Orion Unit.

The Orion Unit is an 8-bedded inpatient service for adults with intellectual disability and complex mental health needs. It offers specialist assessment and treatment tailored to the individual within a multi‑disciplinary team, supporting people during crisis and difficulty.

An IDD Staff Nurse will work within the Inpatient Assessment & Treatment Team at the Orion Unit, Highbury Hospital, Bulwell, Nottingham.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check; the cost (£26.40 standard or £54.40 enhanced) will be deducted from salary over the first 2 months of employment. You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service; an annual fee of £16 applies.

Detailed responsibilities

As a Registered Staff Nurse you will:

  • Assist in leading a team of healthcare workers, student nurses, preceptorship nurses and TNAs to deliver high‑quality specialist assessment and treatment for adults with intellectual disability.
  • Provide knowledge of multi‑disciplinary work, risk management and associated mental‑health care needs, maintaining records in line with Trust Policies and NMC Regulations.
  • Lead within a named nurse group, offering support to carers and families.
  • Assist the Unit Manager and Deputy Team Leaders in assessing, formulating, implementing and evaluating patients’ needs.
  • Support clinical supervision and appraisals of named team members.
  • Work a 24‑hour shift pattern, including days, nights and weekends.

Requirements include experience working with patients with intellectual disability, awareness of relevant legislation and registration with RNLD or RMN.
