Job Overview
We are looking for a Locum Consultant Paediatric Dentistry to cover a 9‑month maternity leave commencing in July 2026. The appointee will join our Community Dental Service in Wakefield to deliver level 3 paediatric dentistry care on a part‑time, 8‑PA basis as part of an established specialist team.
Responsibilities
- Provide high‑quality, comprehensive specialist paediatric oral healthcare to children, including those with behavioural, medical, social, learning or physical disabilities.
- Deliver care in clinics and domiciliary settings, including driving between establishments and transporting appropriate equipment.
- Provide preventative care and oral‑health advice to patients and their parents/carers; support group health‑promotion activities as needed.
- Offer dental care and advice for children referred by colleagues within the service.
- Participate in the exodontia list and comprehensive care general anaesthetic lists at Pinderfields Hospital as required.
- Provide care using inhalation sedation.
- Deliver advice and support to the clinical team in a professional and motivational manner, fostering teamwork within paediatric dentistry.
- Provide guidance to parents, carers and teachers on dental input for multidisciplinary care plans for children with special needs.
- Offer emergency care and advice to all priority patient groups seen within the service.
- Train, supervise, and clinically teach foundation, core, and specialty paediatric dental trainees.
- Collaborate with health professionals and agencies to raise awareness of the oral‑health needs of children and involve them in training.
- Support the clinical audit and peer‑review programmes within the service.
- Attend trust dental clinics, other estates, staff meetings, and service maintenance duties as required.
Qualifications & Essential Criteria
- Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council on the Specialist List for Paediatric Dentistry.
- Inclusion on the Dental Performers List.
- BDS/BChD or equivalent membership/fellowship in Paediatric Dentistry (or equivalent). If lacking post‑CCST or ISFE, provide evidence of suitable management and leadership training or experience.
- Eligibility to work in the UK Dental Performers List.
- Understanding of the functions of Community Dental Services and up‑to‑date knowledge, skills and attitudes to paediatric and adult special‑care dentistry in the UK.
- Demonstrated analytical problem‑solving ability and good time‑management skills.
