Senior Mechanical Engineer – Data Centre (Mission Critical Facilities)

Role Summary
Support the Mission Critical Facilities team in designing mechanical distribution systems for data‑centre projects, including chilled water, HVAC, fuel, and low‑temperature hot water (LTHW) systems. Lead the design and technical specification of data‑centre mechanical systems and equipment, coordinate cross‑disciplinary work, produce calculations and tender documentation, and monitor installation compliance.
Responsibilities
- Support the team in developing designs for mechanical distribution systems (CHW, HVAC, fuel, LTHW).
- Provide advice to clients on mechanical systems and requirements that meet their business needs.
- Lead the design of data‑centre mechanical systems and equipment.
- Prepare written reports of system options in the form of design development notes.
- Produce technical specifications for mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and client requirements.
- Coordinate with other disciplines, including architecture and structural engineering.
- Prepare calculations, technical and equipment specification documentation for tender.
- Monitor the installation of designed equipment/systems to ensure compliance with employer requirements, design specifications and safety codes.
Operational Responsibilities
- Work independently with minimal supervision on all technical aspects of the discipline or a specific specialization applicable to the role.
- Work under the direction of the client and interpret the project needs to meet full delivery objectives.
- Act in a joint leadership capacity within the MEP discipline team, providing design and technical advice in a WSP project manager capacity on a wide range of projects.
- Complete the detailed designs of mission‑critical facilities and all mechanical systems associated with data centres.
- Consider the feasibility of the project specific to the discipline and lead the overall feasibility study for the project.
- Take responsibility for and direct others in producing detailed performance specifications for the discipline subject to review by colleagues prior to issue.
- Review the detailed design programme and ensure sufficient resources are available to complete the works.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Knowledge and experience in designing mechanical systems for data centres.
- Chartered status (or working towards Chartered status) with CIBSE or IMechE or equivalent experience.
- Technical MEP knowledge of relevant UK and EU regulations, design guides, and related standards.
- Understanding of the Uptime Institute Tier Classification System.
- Flexible approach to meet project demands.
- Working knowledge of TAS of IES and Hevacomp, including allocation and direction of work on projects.
- Experience with RevitMEP or other 3D design software for project allocation.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD for project allocation.
- Able to work as part of a team and effectively lead, direct, and mentor individuals within and outside the WSP team.
- Experience working to timescales and deadlines.
