Job Summary

Join the expanding Trauma & Orthopaedics team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant specialising in Knee Surgery. This opportunity offers high‑volume elective practice across Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals, with exposure to a major trauma centre. The role combines speciality knee surgery (soft‑tissue procedures) with a secondary interest in lower‑limb arthroplasty, in a fast‑growing department recognised for patient care and service improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct specialist elective knee surgery (soft‑tissue procedures) and support lower‑limb arthroplasty activity; reduce inpatient and outpatient waiting lists and develop specialist services across the Trust.
  • Participate in the department’s 1:16 Trauma & Orthopaedics on‑call rota, delivering full‑range adult and paediatric trauma care, major referrals, in‑house emergencies and ambulatory services.
  • Work flexibly across Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals as per agreed job plan.
  • Provide high‑quality, patient‑centred care in collaboration with anaesthetists, radiologists, physiotherapists and specialist nursing teams.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service innovation.
  • Teach and supervise undergraduate medical students, resident doctors and allied professionals.
  • Demonstrate commitment to research, education and continuous professional development.

Qualifications

  • GMC registration.
  • CCT or equivalent in orthopaedics.
  • Current ATLS or European Trauma Course provider or instructor.
  • Experience managing complex trauma in both adults and children in an orthopaedic on‑call service.

Additional Requirements

Post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check. A criminal record certificate may be required for skilled worker sponsorship in accordance with UK Visas and Immigration guidance.

Pay & Working Conditions

  • Band: Consultant
  • Salary: £109,725.00 to £145,478.00 yearly
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Working pattern: Full‑time
  • Working sites: Trust‑wide across Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals
