Job Overview

We are looking for an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP) to join our Pain Management Service. The APP will use advanced expertise, knowledge and skills in assessment and management of long‑term conditions using a biopsychosocial model of care.

Service’s Aims

  • Provision of specialist assessment, diagnosis and advice on clinical management (including symptom control and specific interventions) for patients.
  • Provision of advice on clinical management for other professionals working with patients with pain, ME/CFS / LC management service.
  • Development of education and training resources for health professionals.
  • Supporting clinical networks and dissemination of best practice across these networks.
  • Evaluating service needs and planning further service development.
  • Developing capacity for research activity.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The post holder will provide biopsychosocial expertise for the care of patients at all stages of the care pathways. This extends to the support of carers, family, staff and relatives, promotion of psychologically informed and sophisticated systems of care, and service development. It will involve a substantial proportion of out‑patient activity and clinical liaison.

  • Managing a caseload of interventions.
  • Close liaison with other departments within NBT and across primary and secondary care to support an integrated and streamlined approach to patient care.
  • Providing support, training, liaison and consultation to professional colleagues to further develop and support the highest standards of care, including the post holder’s specialism in spinal pain and the use of psychological models to support people with persistent syndromes.
  • Contributing to the training and post‑qualification training of clinicians regarding the management of persistent syndrome.
  • Supporting multi‑professional networking across the region.
  • Provision of supervision for other healthcare professionals.
  • Contributing to the national network of pain and fatigue management clinicians to advance coordinated and consistent care across geographically separate services, both generally in relation to persistent pain, spinal pain and fatigue.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • Responsible for service development, service delivery and implementation of current guidelines and evidence‑based practice. This involves responsibility for triage patients, advanced assessment skills and extensive knowledge in pain and fatigue conditions and psychosocial risk factors that contribute to future disability.
  • Maintaining current evidence‑based intervention, updating materials and leading audit and service development as the intervention continues to be refined.
  • Carrying out specialist assessment of and interventions with individuals referred to the service, liaising with consultant clinicians and GPs.
  • Undertaking group‑based clinical interventions as part of the work profile of the department following appropriate methods of professional practice.
  • Arranging and undertaking regular clinical supervision with a senior member of the department.
  • Participation in an agreed plan of professional development through the annual development and performance review process.
  • Providing clinical supervision for team members and other NBT staff as required.
  • Maintaining records in accordance with NBT, departmental, and professional standards and practices.
  • Ensuring the quality and safety of therapeutic input in all aspects of work, including partnership working with primary care professionals or patient volunteers.
  • Undertaking other work as demanded, varying in agreement with the line manager.
  • Undertaking clinical governance processes, service meetings, clinical audit, the development and observation of service standards and modernisation initiatives.
  • Participating in performance review with the line manager at set intervals.
  • Remaining up to date on relevant issues in the specialist areas and national and local policy matters.

  • Degree in Physiotherapy

  • Evidence of regular CPD
