Job Description
Join our dynamic and multidisciplinary Water Team as a Principal Flood Modeller in one of our UK offices, working under a flexible hybrid model. You will be a senior technical resource, guiding junior staff and proactively developing our offering to the Environment Agency and private sector clients.
Responsibilities
- Technical Expert: Lead the estimation of flood flows using established methodologies in the Flood Estimations Handbook. Develop and check hydraulic models (Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, HEC‑RAS, InfoWorks ICM) to assist the design of flood alleviation schemes, flood risk assessments, river restoration projects or the Environment Agency’s flood maps.
- Deliver: Lead and contribute to tenders ranging from one‑off projects to multimillion‑pound framework contracts. Produce and review high‑quality technical reports documenting model build and uncertainties.
- Collaborate: Work closely with clients and teams of engineers and technical specialists to help deliver fluvial, coastal, surface water or drainage flood risk management projects.
- Lead: Mentor staff within the team to support their professional development and build relationships with clients and other disciplines.
- Quality: Keep up‑to‑date with developments in legislation and guidelines affecting our services. Use AECOM’s project management systems to deliver high‑quality outputs within agreed programme and budget.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Obtained or close to obtaining professional qualification with CIWEM or similar.
- Significant experience in hydraulic modelling software (Flood Modeller and/or TUFLOW) and hydrological assessments using FEH and REFH2.
- Demonstrable knowledge of Environment Agency requirements for flood models in risk assessments.
- Strong GIS skills with QGIS, ArcGIS and/or MapInfo.
- Experience with other modelling types and software, such as flood forecasting or water quality modelling (e.g., Mike 11), is advantageous.
You will be self‑motivated, capable of working autonomously, and committed to a dynamic deadline‑driven team environment.
