The Role

We are recruiting a Process Improvement Lead to lead a high‑performing team of Chemical and Process Engineers within a complex chemical manufacturing environment.

This is a senior technical leadership role with accountability for process engineering excellence, capital project delivery, operational performance improvement, and process safety. You will act as the site’s process engineering authority, working closely with Operations, Engineering, HSE, and Leadership teams to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient plant performance.

The role offers a unique opportunity to influence site strategy, deliver meaningful improvements, and develop engineering capability in a regulated, high‑hazard environment.

Primary Responsibilities

Leadership & Capability

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of process engineers, building strong technical capability and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Set priorities and allocate resources across capital projects, operational support, and process safety activities.
  • Provide technical leadership and act as the escalation point for complex or high‑risk process engineering issues.

Capital Projects

  • Lead process engineering input to capital projects from early concept and business case (Stage 0) through commissioning and close‑out (Stage 4).
  • Ensure high‑quality preparation and review of process engineering deliverables, including:
    • Process calculations and design documentation
    • FEED packages and design basis
    • Control philosophies and user requirement specifications
  • Lead and support:
    • Stage‑gate governance submissions
    • Hazard studies and LOPA activities
    • Vendor evaluations, technical bid reviews, and procurement specifications
    • FAT, SAT, commissioning, and acceptance testing
  • Ensure robust change management, regulatory submissions, and project close‑out, including benefits realisation tracking.

Operational Performance & Improvement

  • Provide senior process engineering and team support to site operations, including:
    • Quality, reliability, and performance investigations
    • Plant trials, start‑ups, and operational changes
    • Process calculations for operational (OPEX) modifications
    • Identify and deliver optimisation opportunities across yield, energy, utilities, and cost.
  • Ensure process documentation, KPIs, reporting, and technical training materials are accurate and maintained.

Process Safety & Compliance

  • Provide leadership and governance for process safety activities across capital and operations.
  • Lead or support ICAM and LIFE investigations, process safety audits, and corrective action management.
  • Ensure effective participation in hazard studies for plant modifications and non‑routine operations.
  • Maintain compliance with COMAH and regulatory requirements, including safety report contributions and relief system assurance.
  • Deputy Responsible Person for Legionella control on site.

Automation, Data & Best Practice

  • Oversee effective use of process data and performance monitoring tools, including PI historian systems.
  • Promote best practice sharing through internal and external centres of excellence.

About You

You are a technically credible chemical/process engineer with strong leadership skills and a passion for improving safety, reliability, and performance.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Chemical Engineering (Chartered status preferred).
  • Significant experience (typically 7+ years) in chemical or process manufacturing.
  • Strong background in process engineering design, operations support, and capital project delivery.
  • Experience working in high‑hazard or heavily regulated environments (e.g. COMAH).
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, or coordinate process engineering teams.
