A privately-owned, financially strong materials business is appointing a National Technical Manager following the retirement of a long-serving incumbent. This is not a reactive hire and it is not a role created to fix a problem. It is an established leadership position that now needs the right person to continue developing it.

Most technical roles at this level sit inside layered, process-heavy corporates where decisions are filtered, ideas are slow to land, and individual influence is limited. This is the opposite.

The Scope

The role spans three areas that are often separated in larger organisations:

Technical — Acting as the internal technical authority. Oversight of product formulation across multiple sites. Consistency, performance, and compliance. Setting and maintaining the standards the business is known for.

Commercial — Providing technical credibility in front of customers. Supporting senior commercial conversations where product integrity and real-world performance matter. This is a customer-facing role and requires someone who can hold their own in those discussions.

Leadership — Managing a team of 9 technical advisors. Setting direction, developing capability, and ensuring consistency across how standards are applied throughout the business.

Who this is for

This is for someone with genuine technical credibility in concrete, asphalt, or closely related materials — but more importantly, someone ready to operate beyond a purely technical remit.

You might currently be a Technical Manager in a larger business who feels constrained — too many layers, too much process, not enough room to actually shape anything. Or you might be a strong Senior Technician, Technologist, or Materials Specialist ready to step into a broader role with real responsibility and visibility.

Location

Base location is flexible between the Scottish Central Belt and the North East of England. The role involves regular travel across sites, in-person engagement with operational teams, and regular head office attendance. For the right candidate willing to relocate, some assistance may be available.

Package

Up to £75,000 base salary, negotiable for the right person Company car Pension and benefits
