We are seeking a full‑time Psychiatry Research Fellow to support the delivery of a translational research depression clinic in Birmingham, funded by the NIHR Mental Health Mission Midlands Translational Research Centre. The clinic offers fast access to assessment and advice for patients with depression referred directly from primary care and includes a recruitment pathway into a cohort study using the digital data collection platform DECODE. It also hosts other studies, including randomised controlled trials focusing on mood disorders.

The successful postholder will work alongside a dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist (appointed), the Research Lead for Mood Disorders Research, and the Co‑Director for the Midlands Translational Research Centre, Professor Marwaha. They will be supported by the Trust’s Research and Development Department, which provides dedicated staff and governance to deliver the Mood Disorders Research Agenda.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will develop and deliver the depression research clinic, including assessments of patients and delivery of advice to GPs. Responsibilities also include research activities related to the cohort study and industry‑funded trials of new pharmacological agents, as well as contributing to research outputs. The fellow will help BSMHFT deliver a range of clinical trials, starting in 2025, and will progress academic training towards ACF/ACL and PhD funding if desired.

Additional responsibilities include attending educational activities, working towards higher‑degree registration, and applying for additional funding.

Person Specification

  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • Fully registered with the GMC, in good standing, with no restrictions or conditions on practice
  • Minimum 6 months NHS clinical experience in Mental Health (excluding medical student and clinical attachment rotations)
  • Understanding and first‑hand experience of research methods relevant to mental health
  • Strong knowledge of Good Clinical Practice
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with colleagues
  • Postgraduate qualification (e.g., Masters in a relevant mental health degree or MRCPsych Part A‑C) or equivalent
  • Research publication and grant‑writing experience

Salary: £52,656 to £73,992 per annum (depending on level, CT1–ST6).
