Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical lead for engineers working cross‑functionally in an agile environment – leading, coding, and deep diving into components and features to uplift capability and shape engineering maturity across the domain.
  • Define and guide the technical architecture for complex, high‑impact data products and platforms, managing Solution Architects and bridging Data Engineering with Data Architecture and wider Technology.
  • Establish engineering patterns, coding standards, and best practices adopted across multiple squads.
  • Translate sophisticated business and technical requirements into scalable, cloud‑native data solutions, building frameworks that support CI/CD pipelines and future capability.
  • Embed rigorous validation, profiling, reconciliation, and automated testing into all engineering work; lead monitoring, observability, and performance optimisation to ensure resilient, reliable data products.
  • Partner with architects, product leaders, and senior stakeholders to shape roadmaps and platform direction, collaborating with Principal Engineer peers to ensure consistent approaches to priority challenges.
  • Communicate complex technical ideas in plain terms to stakeholders at all levels.

Qualifications

  • Deep expertise in cloud data engineering, distributed processing, and enterprise‑scale data architecture, with strong GCP/Python and/or Node.js 8+ knowledge and CI/CD experience (ideally with Jenkins).
  • Advanced SQL proficiency (ideally BigQuery) with strong optimisation and performance‑tuning skills, and experience with coding standards and peer code reviews.

  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders and simplify complex concepts, building strong cross‑functional relationships.
  • Expertise in data quality frameworks, governance standards, and secure handling of sensitive data, connecting engineering choices to long‑term platform strategy and organisational goals.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex data principles to non‑experts and gaining support.
