Job Overview

INSIGHT – the Eye & Oculomics Health Data Research Hub at Moorfields Eye Hospital is the world’s largest ophthalmic bio‑resource, with over 30 million eye images linked to clinical data.

In 2025, INSIGHT was awarded a grant by the Medical Research Council to scale its infrastructure across the NHS, creating a national resource that supports diverse research, improves clinical outcomes, and fosters innovation in eye health.

To deliver on project objectives, INSIGHT is recruiting a Data Scientist & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Specialist to work with leadership to develop and deliver a data and AI development strategy for the project.

Main Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Project Leadership Team to develop and deliver a data and AI development strategy.
  • Use proprietary INSIGHT Research Data Platform technology to scope and curate new datasets in compliance with research ethics, Trust guidance and best practice.
  • Lead analysis of statistical models and algorithms, including bias‑risk assessments, validation and evaluation of predictive utility and interpretability.
  • Review current development techniques and recommend improvements, and validate revised or new methods aligned to Agile project management.
  • Provide advice and expertise for the generation and regular update to the project workplan, including across DevOps and Machine Learning techniques.
  • Coordinate with data and software engineers and informatics teams on data and technical requirements, manage arising conflicts and changes.
  • Provide professional, technical advice, leadership and training in research data analysis and AI training methods to colleagues.
  • Collaborate with project clinical and academic leads to write abstracts, articles and other publications that visualise data and AI outcomes for stakeholders, including high‑impact scientific journals and presentations at national and international conferences.
  • Collaborate with the broader project team and other clinical/research staff to identify and communicate opportunities for new funding, share research resources, and prepare reports and presentations for internal and external review.
  • Demonstrate a high level of accountability for professional actions and decision‑making.
  • Keep abreast of the latest health data, technical and scientific research developments and their applications in medicine and associated fields.
  • Actively promote research and innovation through INSIGHT at Moorfields.
  • Perform any other duties as directed by the Director of INSIGHT and/or Chief Operating Officer.

Education / Qualifications

  • Essential: A PhD or master’s degree with equivalent professional experience in health data science or a relevant field.
  • Desirable: Project management qualification (e.g., PRINCE2).

Knowledge and Experience

  • Essential: Demonstrable experience in biomedical and health data science or epidemiology, including medical imaging techniques and clinical data structures in ophthalmology.
  • Expertise building statistical models, using machine learning with Python libraries, and MLOps tools for optimisation.
  • Experience mining and analysing electronic health records (EHR) and knowledge of clinical terminologies (e.g., SNOMED‑CT).
  • Experience with data management tools such as SQL.
  • Demonstrable use of programming in collaborative and reproducible analysis pipelines.
  • Experience using data visualisation to communicate complex data to non‑technical audiences.
  • Ability to assimilate new ideas and work with problem owners to turn ideas into practical, applied techniques.
  • Understanding of data collection, governance, verification and processing within the NHS and/or for health research.
  • Experience in academic writing and publications (abstracts, articles for journals and conferences).
  • Desirable: Familiarity with multiple paradigms for mathematical representation of complex systems (differential equation modelling, mathematical programming and optimisation).
  • Desirable: Experience with cloud computing (GCP, Azure ML, AWS SageMaker), containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), or version control (Git).

Employment Conditions

The post holder will be based at Moorfields in Central London with occasional travel nationally and internationally as required.
