Band 7 Macmillan Information and Support Manager
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate registered nurse/AHP to join our team as a Macmillan Information and Support Manager at St Bartholomew's Hospital. This is a part-time position (3 days per week – Wed, Thurs, Fri), offering a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people affected by cancer.
As the Macmillan Information and Support Manager, you will lead the delivery of high‑quality, accessible information and emotional support services for patients, families, and carers. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that individuals receive the guidance, resources, and reassurance they need throughout their cancer journey.
Main duties of the job
- Manage and develop the Macmillan Information and Support Service at St Bartholomew's Hospital.
- Provide expert, evidence‑based information and emotional support to patients, carers, and families.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of support services.
- Lead on service development, evaluation, and reporting to meet patient needs and organisational goals.
- Supervise and support staff and volunteers working within the service.
Act as a key liaison with Macmillan Cancer Support and other partner organisations.
Qualifications
- Registered General Nurse or Allied Health Professional
- Post‑registration qualification in cancer/palliative care or relevant subject
- Evidence of Masters level learning or prepared to work towards
- Advanced Communication Skills Training (or willingness to complete)
- Level 2 Psychological Skills training (or willingness to complete)
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Recognised counselling qualification
Experience
- Relevant post‑registration experience, at Band 6 or above, in cancer, palliative care
- Experience of working with people with cancer or a life‑threatening/chronic illness
- Experience of providing patient education and information in a health care setting
- Management experience in speciality or related area
- Experience of providing person‑centred cancer information
- Experience of managing a team or service
- Participation in service development and implementation of change
- Experience of teaching and assessing in the clinical area
- Experience of quality improvement
- Experience of working with charities and/or community groups
- Experience of working with volunteers
- Experience of the personalised care agenda (e.g. key worker role, HNAs)
- Experience with hosting health and wellbeing events
Skills & Abilities
- Skilled in communicating complex and sensitive issues at all levels, including the necessity to change operational practice
- Able to offer teaching and training and coordinate the use of volunteers
- Ability to work autonomously with judgement and skill
- Able to see the need to seek advice from external reference points and initiate such enquiries
- Ability to work under pressure and deal with feedback
- Clear understanding of quality assurance issues around patient information
- Able to influence and overcome resistance through application of advanced communication skills
- Able to analyse complex clinical data and provide written reports to Macmillan and trust managers
- Intermediate IT skills in word processing and spreadsheets
- Knowledge of professional and NHS issues, and policy relating to specialist area
- Able to present information to professional groups
- Able to participate / undertake clinical audit & research
- An understanding of information governance, data and system security, both individual and corporate confidentiality
- Knowledge of NHS Data model and data flows, data definitions, cancer dataset and national cancer audit dataset
