The post entails caring for patients and preparing them for surgery, ensuring all safety processes followed, and receiving the patients post recovery ensuring they are fully prepared for discharge. Providing care for patients as required until they are ready for discharge. Arranging transport, medication, investigations as required. Working with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the processes are efficient and safe, to ensure theatre productivity is maintained. Communicating and caring for the patients throughout their journey. There may be requirements for staff to work in other areas of the department. Working in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and following local hospital and statutory guidelines and policies. Please note that this role is not open for Visa Sponsorship.

Main duties of the job

  • Implement basic nursing healthcare independently.
  • Work in all areas within the day surgery unit including theatres and ward areas
  • Participate with nursing and medical teams to provide a safe environment undergoing day surgery procedures, including checking and maintenance of equipment
  • be competent to manage a list from admission to discharge for any speciality within the department.
  • be competent to give ophthalmology drops and oral medication

Job responsibilities

  • implement basic nursing healthcare independently
  • implement new/complex care with supervision.
  • ensure safe techniques used when moving and handling patients and equipment
  • implement research based practice as required.
  • participate with the multi-disciplinary team in decision making regarding patient care.
  • accurately document care and evaluate, using theatre management systems as required.
  • ensure all audits and safety checks maintained
  • Give oral and ophthalmic medication as required.
  • work in all areas of the Unit
  • develop preceptorship skills and actively support peers
  • develop supervisory skills
  • participate in nursing/departmental audit and quality initiatives
  • communicate nursing interventions to relatives and carers with rationale and be able to demonstrate listening skills and the use of non-verbal cues.
  • evaluate written information and documentation.
  • participate in the multi-disciplinary decision making process regarding changes in patient care and order of operating lists.
  • Be competent to manage a list and give required patient care from admission to discharge for any specialty within departmental guidelines.

  • Post registration experience working in an acute hospital setting
  • Proven clinical experience in relevant area
  • Experience working with acutely ill patients
  • Evidence of teaching and assessing
  • Ability to utilise pre registration experience to demonstrate an understanding of the relevant settings.

Skills and aptitudes

  • Proven clinical skills in relevant area
  • Demonstrates a genuine interest and has awareness of issues in specialty
  • Evidence of self development within speciality
  • Knowledge of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Awareness of current nursing and NHS issues
