Job Overview

NHS England has developed a programme to establish Rapid Diagnostic Centres (RDCs) to promote earlier diagnosis or rule out cancer. This role works independently under the guidance of the Rapid Diagnostic Leads to enable and support patients on the Rapid Diagnostic Service (RDS) pathway, providing specialist advice to professionals regarding individuals presenting with symptoms that could be due to cancer.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently under the guidance of Rapid Diagnostic Leads to support patients on the RDS pathway.
  • Provide specialist advice to professionals about possible cancer symptoms.
  • Communicate with multiple healthcare professionals across primary and secondary care.
  • Act as the named point of contact for patients, providing constant support and information from referral to diagnosis or when a Cancer Nurse Specialist is assigned.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence‑based care programmes.
  • Triage complex referrals that require specialist management to appropriate clinical staff.
  • Manage an agreed patient caseload where diagnosis may be uncertain, applying clinical judgment and skills.
  • Order, undertake, interpret and act upon diagnostic tests and investigations.
  • Identify, assess and triage patients to ensure smooth transition to other services.
  • Coordinate with the Multi Diagnostic Clinic teams to arrange appointments and review patient progress.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with NMC registration or Radiographer registration.
  • Healthcare degree (or in progress).
  • Evidence of personal development.
  • You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

Desirable Criteria

  • First degree in a relevant health care area.
  • Completion or ongoing postgraduate level (HEI level 7) study, or willingness to undertake it.
  • Relevant specialist post-basic programme experience.
  • Teaching, assessment or mentoring qualification, demonstrating up‑to‑date knowledge in the specialty.
  • Knowledge of key professional issues and guidelines relating to professional practice.
  • Evidence of working across organisational boundaries.
  • Experience within or alongside multi‑professional teams.
  • Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice.
  • Evidence of teaching or training staff.
  • Experience & ability to work as an autonomous practitioner.
